Hello, I have a 3 y o and looking to buy in Nottingham. Lovely houses north of the city in mapperley Park particularly but I've heard secondary schools are not great there. We don't want to go private. I've heard a new secondary opening in the city near MP. Any ideas what it will be like? Or how are the other secondary options? Thank you

Antisocial behaviour and crime in that area is horrific, lots of gangs, violent attacks, armed burglaries, especially St Anns nearby, it's known as the no go area and not somewhere you'd want to raise a child, I won't even take my kids to that area during the day. Schools aren't great, again lots of violence, drug use and antisocial behaviour. You'd be better off going further out towards Gedling or if being that side of the city isn't hugely important, go more west of the city towards areas like Bulwell, Beeston, Kimberley, all have fantastic schools, very nice areas although more expensive as a result & still only a maximum of 20 minutes drive into the city centre

Hi I live in this area. It’s a great family-friendly area. I don’t think it’s anything like the previous response!
Mapperley Park catchments are split over 3 schools for Primary so it depends where you are. Haydn is excellent. Carrington Very good. But both are very oversubscribed (especially Haydn) and kids from MP are on the edge of the area so don’t always get in.
The risk with MP is that you get one of the St. Ann’s schools which is a pretty rough area.
The new secondary is already open in theory but the site has not been completed. It is part of the Bluecoat Academy which is very well regarded. It is Catholic though so depends how you feel about that. The new campus has been delayed but is due to open this Sept with pupils moving to the new site from one of the other Bluecoat sites. There are very limited options for other secondary schools as they are all some way.
A large number of families use the nearby private schools NHS/NGHS/Hollygirt that live in this area as they are walkable from MP.

I agree with above. MP is a lovely area, but has St Anns bordering it which is not a particularly nice area. As PP said, you are very near NHS and NGHS with NHS having amazing results, but if you want state, have you looked at West Bridgford , Wollaton, Bramcote and Beeston ? All with good/outstanding schools and very family friendly

Thanks, I just prefer the housing, and feel of mapperley Park. But schools probably more important!

Archway Learning Trust (inc Bluecoat schools) is Church of England-based, not Catholic. Our experience was very good with one of their other schools (Emmanuel), despite its mixed catchment.

@ILikePistachios go more west of the city towards areas like Bulwell

I don’t disagree with you about St Ann’s, but Bulwell? 😳

stripycats · 26/05/2024 13:50

Lol at Bulwell being a better area than Mapperley Park and Mapperley Park not being safe to walk around in the day! And at Bulwell, Kimberley and Beeston being more expensive than MP!!
