I'm an exams officer and have seen so much misinformation flying round about children missing exams so thought I'd start a thread with some advice!
1- don't panic it's unlikely to be the end of the world.
2- contact attendance (or whoever you report absences to at your school) and then email the exams officer. Don't insist on talking to them (and don't yell at the receptionist if she says they are starting an exam so can't come to the phone). If you want a call back ask for one and then chase if you don't hear from them after a couple of days.
3- don't buy a GP letter!!! You don't need one. If you have anything like a GP appointment confimation, GP appointment transcript, prescription you can take a photo of,, medication covering the illness that you can take a photo of then email that to the exams officer as evidence.
4- if your dc doesn't need to see anyone (if they have a vomiting bug etc) then ask for a JCQ self certification form, fill that in and send it back to the exams officer.

JCQ Special consideration doesn't have to be done until several days after the end of exams so there is no rush to get it all sorted on the day.
If your dc is doing a non JCQ exam then the process might be different so ask for advice from the exams officer. Just remember it's a really busy time of year for us and we might not be at our desks to answer calls or emails everyday so don't be afraid to chase but be patient.
Most of all reassure your dc that it's not the end the world, illness happens and can't be helped and the exam board will help as much as they can. Sometimes looking after your health is more important than exams and that's OK!

Hi BerryCherryPie
Thank you for providing this information.
My son was throwing up all night and all day today. He missed his A level exam this morning. There was no way he could've taken it. We contacted school and exam officer who were all very nice and intimated that his other two exams would be taken into account and he would be given an average across the three papers but it would have to go to the board. Is this something you would expect? They also told us to self certify. I'm just so gutted for him, he has been working so hard for this. Thanks again for the advice.

haveyougotyourphonebuspass he'll have to do the self certification as vomiting doesn't need a medical appointment. Once you've done the self cert form it will go to the exam board and they'll decide whether to accept it or not (you can never say for certain but I've never seen a genuine absence request which is supported by the school declined) and then if accepted the board will do an aggregated grade. It's a bit more complicated than this but basically they look at what your ds scored for the papers he took and then look at how students with the same scores did on the paper he missed and then give him an average.
It's fairly common to miss one exam and it's routine for the exam boards to deal with, it just doesn't feel that way as a parent or student!
Tell your ds not to worry though, the exam board won't want to disadvantage him and he should just concentrate on getting better now.

Hi Op, would the child end up sitting a completely different exam then? If they take it afterwards

Or will it be the same one? Surely not as then friends etc can tell them what's on the test

PatriciaHolm · 22/05/2024 20:48

They don't take the missed exam at all. A grade would be calculated from the other papers they take in that subject, if enough are taken.

@BerryCherryPie

It is good of you to explain further. My DS has missed the second English Lit paper, which is his best subject and had studied so hard for both but was particularly looking forward to the topics on paper 2. We ended up getting a private doctor appointment to have evidence as local GP wouldn’t provide one. He is taking it at an exam centre rather than a school, so the buck stops with me.
He is braving English Lang tomorrow even though he is still unwell. It has been very stressful but it helps to know it is not that uncommon.
