Which private girls schools in London are good for an all rounder?

FantaFizz · 12/05/2024 16:03

My DD is quite happy and is an all rounder at John Lyon, She is on the A team for sports, actively participates in music and plays various instruments. She also excels in all her school subjects. But one thing I have noticed, is that the environment of boys in the older years is quite intimidating as there aren't as many girls here. She is a confident speaker, and girls are joining at sixth form in 2025.

But I do think she could strive even better in an all girls environment.

We were thinking about St Margret's but that too has turned co-ed, preferably Francis Holland, CLSG

My DD did get into Habs but I heard that they will be merging with the boys school, and I wasn't too keen for Habs either.

Any thoughts or picks for which private girls schools could be suitable for her?

It’s about fit and what suits her skills & personality. CLSG is excellent and fiercely competitive as is St Paul
where do you live? What’s a manageable commute? that’s obviously a factor
Go visit potential schools, met staff, see environment, see what you feel about vibe & suitability , you’re fortunate to be in such a position

FantaFizz · 12/05/2024 18:13

@Zone2NorthLondon Thank you so much, I am considering St Paul as it seems like a really nice environment for my DD. But I will definitely check it out for myself and visit all the schools. It is a 40 minute commute from where we live and I think DD can manage the commute as she is used to commuting a lot.

We live around North West London, so it is an easy commute to most of our top choice schools but if my DD appeals to other schools, I am open to move closer for her.

Colleagues use St. Paul’s and they say it’s v supportive, nurturing etc. exciting to visit potential choices. 40min is an ok commute in london. Headphones on and all that

examsexamsexamsexams · 12/05/2024 18:41

Surely it slightly depends on if you want her to move this September as many will be full?

examsexamsexamsexams · 12/05/2024 18:43

And Year 10 would be a very tricky time to move. Most schools wouldn't take a new pupil then.

Zone2NorthLondon · 12/05/2024 18:45

What I wil say,is you’ll hear contradictory & conflicting views regard every school. What’s a fit for you is jarring for someone else.

Basically the universal script it goes like this…school x, y or z (insert school name) is
too competitive
not nurturing
cliquey
impersonal
exams obsessed
full of fragile pupils with ED
someone knows someone who said it’s a hellish gulag….
you get the picture.
Use your own individual knowledge of your DD and her feels for it too

FantaFizz · 12/05/2024 18:56

@Zone2NorthLondon Glad to hear that St Pauls is supportive and nurturing, just what I want for my DD. 40 minute is fine, she can just put on headphones and all that. Thank you for all the advice, and yes I do get the picture. I have read many others and all the sentences are like that. I think she is leaning more towards St Pauls as she has got in. But I will keep my options open and see what DD feels too.

@examsexamsexamsexams We have already applied to St Pauls and she has got in, so we might as well move her. We just need to buy uniform and all that, but I just wanted to grab a feel from other perspectives aswell. But I have already went and visited the school and I quite like the environment.

@examsexamsexamsexams Yes, many schools don't take in regular y10's so that would be hard if that was for DD.

examsexamsexamsexams · 12/05/2024 19:14

That's good- you didn't mention that in your OP!

Zone2NorthLondon · 12/05/2024 19:17

Stick with St Paul it’s a super school. Congratulations

HawaiiWake · 12/05/2024 19:17

St.Paul Girls school doesn’t have uniform.

St.Paul Girls school doesn’t have uniform.

It does have sports uniform though and they seem to wear it every day!

tridento · 12/05/2024 19:29

The schools who are becoming co-Ed will be at most 50:50 boys. But most likely still girl heavy. Your issue with where you are is that it's boy heavy. I don't think she'll find boys intimidating at a predominantly girls school

FantaFizz · 12/05/2024 19:30

@examsexamsexamsexams Yes, that's what I was thinking. I am not too sure if I should get the sports uniform, but It seems like they always wear it. I might aswell buy it for DD.

FantaFizz · 12/05/2024 19:32

@tridento That is what I was thinking, I was contemplating about St Margret's that it is Co-ed. But as a matter of fact, it will be the opposite indeed because they have only recently accepted boys.

She'll have to have some of the sports uniform surely? Haven't you had to accept the offer yet? And been given a uniform list etc?

Ayalga · 13/05/2024 13:01

@FantaFizz It may be useful if you clarify what advice you are seeking, in this and the other threads that you have opened - people are, unsurprisingly, finding them confusing / difficult to engage with. You were asking for advice on schools for all rounders, specifically mentioning CLSG and Francis Holland (and St Margaret's) but you are now disclosing that your DD has already a place at SPGS (which surely is a key factor to consider if that is indeed the case)!

The schools you are mentioning are pretty different in terms of location, academic standing, ethos,...(even fees). If your DD indeed has a place in them and you are seeking advice, worth stating so upfront, ideally making the title of the thread specific. Have you visited? Has your daughter? What do you think?

TheRainItRaineth · 13/05/2024 18:38

The sports uniform is compulsory, but you don't need every single last bit of it. Stick to the bits that will definitely be worn - shirts, tracksuit bottoms, shorts/skort depending on preference, socks, maybe a hoodie.

You should definitely visit before accepting a place.

FantaFizz · 13/05/2024 19:09

@Ayalga Many apologies on the confusion, but what I meant to put in my opening statement is that I have 3 DD's. One is heading to sixth form, one is going to SPGS and the other is trying out private schools as she is in year 4.

I know my OP isn't the best as it causes too much confusion sorry,
And I should have included all this information in my OP, many apologies.

Ayalga · 13/05/2024 20:07

@FantaFizz beyond your clarification of having 3 DDs at different stages, what is confusing and surprising people is that in 3 different threats you mention a DD in Y8 and ask for generic advice ... to then post that she has a place at SPGS.
If your DD has indeed a place at SPGS I would have thought that this would be quite central to your questioning.
imho, worth you starting a threat from scratch, with a focused and upfront title and clarity upfront on the scenario and questions. Otherwise, you will get (at best) unfocused advice and (at worst) people being suspicious about your posts

TheRainItRaineth · 13/05/2024 20:28

Agree with @Ayalga - you should start a post with the circumstances of all three DDs and which ones you specifically want advice about, and which schools you are considering for each. It is a bit hard to understand what you are asking!
