Tutor for Y11 entrance exam

SuuzeeeQ · 04/05/2024 10:56

I have an academic child in Y4 (Y5 from September) and we are looking at private secondary school as they are very good especially the boys schools. One school is one of the best outside of London.

Unfortunately the secondary schools in our catchment area are not great and we can’t move to a different catchment area for a number of reasons.

i saw an ad for a tutor that runs a program throughout Y5 to prepare children for the entrance exams. It’s a mix of group prep, 1:1 and homework. It’s fairly expensive (£1500 total) and I was wondering if people could share their experiences with these sort of tutoring programs. Are they worth it and what do I need to look for? Thanks

Sorry typo in title. Obviously not Y11 but 11+ exams for Y7 entry.

Ask MNHQ to change your title. You’ll get
more responses that way.

Is it online? £1500 seems cheap as chips to me.

No, not online.
it’s two 1;1 sessions per term and weekly group sessions in person. The group sessions are 3-6 kids. Plus some homework and feedback and one interview practice. I assume I can book additional 1:1 if needed.

It’s not in London btw.

That sounds like a good deal to me.

I think you need to work out how many sessions you will actually get in total, to check if it’s value for money. You could easily pay £50 for a one to one lesson and £35 for group, which would probably add up to £1500 very quickly.

I'd say that word-of-mouth is better than ads. See if you can ask local parents who are with kids at Y5 going through this process at the moment or who are currently in Y6.

SuuzeeeQ · 05/05/2024 14:45

@Rekka unfortunately I don’t know any local parents who are doing this/have done this
