Richmond secondary schools and technology

Hello there! As we prepare for our move to UK my kid asked if the secondary schools use laptops or iPads 👨‍💻💻 in classes? We are looking at Richmond or St Albans currently for the move.

Thank you! 🙏

Your question doesn't quite make sense 🙂. I think you mean "a laptop or a tablet" (if distinguishing by size) or maybe you meant "a Windows device or an iOS device or a Chromebook" (if distinguishing by operating system).

An iPad is a tablet with an iOS operating system, but tablets with other operating systems are available

The answers depend on the school. Is it a state school or private? What age is your child?

If the school website says students have to take a device into school, then it makes sense to have a tablet or very small laptop, as it is easier to carry. If they don't, then a laptop with a bigger screen on their desk at home will be most comfortable. It's reasonably common for older students (post-16) to either have both or else have a very small, light laptop.

If younger, then a tiny number of state schools require you to buy a specific device, usually a Chromebook (as relatively cheap). Some schools issue devices. Most don't.

If the school has no specific policy, then it doesn't matter, so long as whatever you buy can run standard office software such as MS365 or Google Classroom.

Personally I would always buy a MS Windows device for home use, because I associate it with my world of work. Parents in creative industries may lean towards iOS devices for similar reasons.

The first time my boys had to take a device into school was in year 12. I got a cheap chromebook, which did the job, even though it could only really run cloud-based apps. I didn't want to buy something expensive in case it was lost or damaged.

When my eldest went to uni, he needed something more powerful, as well as transportable, so I got him an MS Surface.

p.s. my boys both had their own MS Windows laptops on their desks in their bedrooms from the start of secondary school, which they used to do their homework.

My question was more general if they use technology at school for day to day tasks and lessons. Yes 😅. For example where we are they use Chromebook since they are year 4 and tablets before that.

My son will be year 8th on September. I was more curious about state schools. Thank you!

Thanks @troobador . Yes, my question was more general laptops or tables etc. Not necessarily specific to OS. Thanks!

A Chromebook is a computer with a Chrome operating system - it can be in tablet or laptop form.

Most state schools don't require a device. Some do. Which schools are you looking at?

Hard to say now. It depends what schools will have a place for us in the summer. Currently the only schools that have vacancies are Richmond Park Academy and Twickenham School. We will check again with the borough in July to see what the status is 🤞🤞🤞.

Neither of those schools require a specific device.

In UK in many primary schools they use chromebooks when needed for interactive apps. They also have computer technology lessons. Just as it is in Australia children have to be able to learn handwriting. Only some children are allowed to use chromebooks for longer pieces.

The same is in secondary school. Some kids e.g. with dispraxia are allowed to use computers/chromebooks widely whereas most of the kids are using it only for specific tasks.

Schools in UK have computer labs, libraries with computers, laptops to borrow, and some are allowing to use kid's own equipment if that is required for a child that has dyspraxia. My son does and I asked in frw Richmond schools: Teddington, Orlean Park, Turing, SRR either are providing the laptop with switched off spelling checker or you can use your own and they just ensure it is switched off before graded tests.
