Music Aptitude tests

I have recently come to know that some selective state schools have music seats and have music aptitude tests for 11+ admission. Where can I see a list of such schools? And the what’s a good level for children to be able to apply? Thanks a lot

Try the search engine term 'state school music aptitude places'?

Music apptitude test is diffirent route than 11+ entry. You just need to google which schools in your are have this possibility. West London Free School has one for example.
Also, it is not about the level but rather how „musical” your child is, if that makes sense.

Some of the state schools in the South West Herts Consortium (Watford area) have a music test. Although in theory you don't need to have a particular grade, instrumentalists who get a music place tend to be Grade 3 or above. Singers don't usually do grades so might get in without having done a grade exam.

Indeed - the Admissions Code makes it clear that schools have to ensure that if they are (apparently) allocating places on 'aptitude' (whether for music or one of the other permitted subjects for selection), then the test used will test for just this.

Unfortunately, the search wording I tried, which seemed a logical place to start, in case such a list actually existed, provided a list, but also a commercial organisation offering to tutor pupils in demonstrating that they have musical aptitude.

These are for state schools who want to attract gifted musicians. Different to 11+ private school exams. These would be served with a scholarship which would be % off fees if good enough.

One of our local schools has this. It's aptitude rather than ability and open to musicians and singers whether or not they have lessons

Doesn't aptitude mean ability? You might or might not have completed grades.

In our experience, and DD sat a lot of aptitude tests in music, no school had the same process or test, and you're probably better off not prepping for it beyond normal music lessons.

DD doesn't do exams at all, but when she sat the aptitude tests was around G6 level in one and G3 level in the second. At some schools that seemed to be about the norm and others she was definitely ahead.

Some have performance parts to the tests, others just things like pitch testing. Some schools have a strong preference for classical and for orchestral instruments, some are more broadminded.

If your child is very musical then go for it, if you're just chasing a way of getting a place then be careful... some schools have onerous commitment requirements for those on aptitude places.
