Hi, I don’t know if anyone (maths teachers or home edders?) can help me. I know this is a question that cuts across a number of topics but I thought I would start here as there is probably more traffic.
I have a y12 ds who has just been diagnosed with autism and is highly anxious. He claims to be interested in his A levels and is attending most of the lessons but is refusing to do any of the homework. Obviously this means he isn’t getting any practice and the teacher is unable to ascertain what he doesn’t understand. He is not short of talent at maths (did very well in maths challenges before COVID) but his anxiety is getting in the way of his learning. After tearing our hair out for months we have finally got him to explain why he isn’t handing anything in - he’s terrified of getting it wrong and not living up to what everyone expects of him. (His dad is a maths professor so it’s not difficult to work out where this comes from, but here we are.)
I think he might be able to bring himself to attempt some practice if he could be absolutely confident that only he and the computer would ever know if he gets it wrong. The school has a subscription to Integral Maths and I think that is basically what we need only without his teacher being able to see what he has done. We don’t mind paying for a subscription but I am aware there’s a lot out there of different qualities. And he doesn’t really need online lessons, just to do some questions and have them marked, so it would need to not be something that forced you to watch a video before you can progress.
Does anyone have any recommendations or other suggestions about online resources for A level maths and further maths practice? Many thanks x
