GCSE's - what happens when they finish?

HI all, Just wondering, when the GCSE's are finished, do the students then have to attend daily lessons until the term finishes for the whole school, or do they have an early break? thanks

No they leave after their last exam and they are done.

LIZS · 06/03/2024 11:48

Official school leaving day at end of June, but they do not usually attend other than for exams/revision sessions after May half term. Some schools support work experience or pre sixth form tasters and activities, plus prom.

Springdeclutter · 06/03/2024 11:51

Generally they leave after exams done. I don’t think there are any schools left out there where they have to stay. Decades ago the girls grammar school hereabouts taught the year 11s cookery, deportment etc. after exams. Bet they loved that 😂

SaffronSpice · 06/03/2024 11:58

In Scotland it is different, after the last Nat 5s (GCSE equivalent) exam - which start and finish earlier than GCSEs - you go back to school to start the next academic year. In secondary all the year groups move up at the end of May and do 4 to 6 weeks of that year’s timetable before the summer holiday.

Sourisblanche · 06/03/2024 11:59

A week of work experience (which we still need to organise!). Thanks for the reminder.

NewYearResolutions · 06/03/2024 12:21

@SaffronSpice but what academic year are they starting when some aren't going to continue. In the local secondaries, they have trouble getting the Year 11s to stay in school uniforms in the summer term as it is. Imagine trying to get them back after GCSE.

We are in a 11-16 secondary area, so everyone leaves so that must make a difference too.

barleyseed · 06/03/2024 12:23

Depends on the school, some to the sixth form introduction for those that are going straight through, some do work experience, some just dismiss the kids before the exams and dont have them back at all

Feelingstrange2 · 06/03/2024 12:27

Depends what year they are in. Also depends on the school. Ours didn't have any sixth form so what they did was....

The Y11 GCSE students finished school when the exams start and only went in for the exams and any scheduled revision lessons. Once they'd sat their final exam they had the summer off - apart from a leavers day.

Other school years are different. Other schools arr probably different too.

clary · 06/03/2024 12:30

I don’t know any schools (in England tbf) that expect year 11s to come back after exams.

Well for prom maybe and leavers’ assembly … but for lessons? Unlikely. What if they were going to college or a different sixth form or an apprenticeship?

butelass · 06/03/2024 12:40

Y11s have such a long summer. Scotland doesn't have sixth forms separately. Secondaries are all straight through. So they move up for a month of new courses after the final exam. It's great - they get a few weeks of it to try out, also better for the younger years who all move up at same time and have new classes/courses to keep them engaged until summer, and empties the S1 timetable for the primary transition. Sometimes the exam classes may make a change at summer rather than it being October when they realise their choices aren't right.

PatriciaHolm · 06/03/2024 12:47

I would just add that in England/wales, there are contingency days' for summer 2024 examinations: Thursday 6 June 2024 afternoon. Thursday 13 June 2024 afternoon. Wednesday 26 June 2024 full day. - in case of problems with an exam. So pupils need to be available until the end of the last contingency day, just in case, though they don't go into school between their last exam and that day

menopausalmare · 06/03/2024 12:51

They leave and teachers have gained time. Whoop whoop.

EauNeu · 06/03/2024 15:49

They are done after contingency day on 26th(maybe before if that's not needed, last exam for us is 17th) and we have flights booked for 27th to get a jump on the hols

MrsAvocet · 06/03/2024 23:26

If your DC is staying on for 6th form they'll probably have a day or two of 6th form induction and they may get given some bridging work that needs to be done at home before they start their A level courses but once exams are done that is basically it for the year.

mondaytosunday · 06/03/2024 23:41

Our school classes were over after the Easter break and they just went in for exams and that was it.
