Commute to Hampton School or LEH from Clapham Junction area

Dear Parents,

I'm reaching out to see if there are any parents in the Clapham Junction/Northcote Road area with a son attending Hampton School or a daughter attending Lady Eleanor Holles School. I'm interested in learning about your experiences, especially if your child commutes using the train from Clapham Junction. Could you provide insights into what the journey is like for an 11-year-old boy?

My son has secured a place for Year 7 at Hampton School. However, we reside off the Northcote Road and have discovered that we are not within the school coach network area. We conducted a trial using the train from Clapham Junction to Hampton, followed by a bus (111) to the school. The entire journey took approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes door to door, which doesn't seem too bad.

We are currently exploring all possible alternatives, including the option of relocation. Any insights or comments you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Train strikes or delays may make it hectic. Is there the option of travelling to coach network stop? Would this be quicker or too early a start?

I know acquaintance who travels from a similar area to the Hampton schools. As a previous poster suggested, the train/bus timetable is unreliable and they ended up driving their kids to school from time to time. Because of the traffic on the bridge crossing, it took up to 60 mins one way. So maybe drive to coach network stop is a good alternative.

Why don’t you drive him to the Southfields stop? That should take you 10min and then he can take the coach from there.

SquirmOfEels · 26/02/2024 10:39

It might be worth seeing if there's a reliable journey to one of the coach stops (but bear in mind that if they miss the coach, then they're a bit stuck).

Putney might be likeliest (the stops in Wimbledon don't link that well to other public transport from between the Commons)

But in terms of school commutes from Clapham Junction, then yes do-able (lots route through there for the Croydon schools and Woldingham). But you will need a fall back if there are strikes or other interruptions to trains/buses

train to East Sheen from Clapham junction and then bus route C3A

Kitchendisco2 · 26/02/2024 12:54

You don’t need to get a bus from train station to school. Most boys just walk.

TigerOnTour · 26/02/2024 16:45

The trains to Hampton are every 30 mins I think and frequently cancelled/only run to Teddington.

tennissquare · 26/02/2024 17:22

Yea agree re unreliable trains, you can get a train to Hampton Court that arrives at 0812 and walk over the bridge and get a bus to arrive (just) on time. (Trains also every 30 mins to Hampton court).

RedFluffyPanda · 26/02/2024 18:34

I live next street to Hampton school. There is a 20 min walk from the train station to the school. He can always take a bus but these are packed in the morning and he may not squeeze in.
Probably a foldable bike+ train would be a better option. But the best would be to move to Hampton.

Hampton School is in Hampton and not Hampton Court. 🤨The closest two stations are Hampton and Fulwell with direct links to Clapham Junction. Hampton Court is far away.

tennissquare · 26/02/2024 18:43

@RedFluffyPanda , I live near Hampton court station, a large number of dc at Hampton / LEH who live in Molesey, Thames Ditton etc commute via Hampton court station and the bus. When the trains to Hampton aren't running properly those coming from new Malden, Wimbledon, Kingston station can commute via Hampton court and the bus.

RedFluffyPanda · 26/02/2024 19:31

@tennissquare but they don't live at Clapham Junction and it works for them. Hampton station has direct link to Waterloo Station via Clapham Junction station. It doesn't make sense to step out at a further station which is Hampton Court. Even stepping out at Twickenham would make more sense and taking R70 from there.

Coming to this a bit late but just to say Southfields coach stop works for us with the back up of the train. What with all the train strikes the coach is a nicer, more reliable option if you can make the journey by car and drop them off in the morning. Doesn't take long in the early morning. Then there's a bus that goes back to Clapham Junction. Will pm you more info. I recommend booking the coach if you haven't already because it can get booked up.
