Thank you @farfallarocks. I agree, it is difficult to tell whether the preps are just trying to encourage us to stay on for their numbers!

All the best to your DD and enjoy the taster days!

CocoC · 21/02/2024 11:28

Does anyone know, if you are on the WL for a school and get an offer, which would obviously be after the offer holders day, do you get a chance to visit it or talk to the head or a head of year there before accepting, or are you supposed to just thank your lucky stars and take it no questions asked?
Asking because we are on a WL for a school we never got to visit, as well as having some offers, and if WL converted into an offer, I would be keen for DD to be able to go round it and ask a few Qs before accepting….

Gosh I think both mine (especially the younger one) would absolutely love the chance to flexi board 1 or 2 nights a week..that’s not so much “boarding” as “weekly sleepover” 😁! Appreciate it still leaves several days of longer journeys though. Which is the flexi school if you don’t mind saying (asking with Dc2 in mind!)

Agree it sounds like there is not enough journey difference (esp with flexi) to swing you away from a school you all prefer.

As a St J parent I can confirm that the kids see it as a sleepover. They organise which night they are all going to sleep over and then request the same room with matron, and have a wonderful evening and a full fry up for breakfast the next day! It’s very popular. The school also does boarding nights that are very popular too, where the school take them out to golf or bowling or SIMS and pizza etc. As for travel, my children’s bus takes about 40 mins and seems standard. They don’t mind as all homework is done at school. So they all veg out on their phones on the bus and then have their evening free at home.

I'd say probably not a visit- we had a WL place a few years ago and we didn't have long to accept. I think the offer came on a Friday and acceptance day was the Monday so there would have been no chance anyway. But I'm sure you would be able to spark to someone on the phone to ask questions etc.
It might depend on the schools though and how desperate they are to fill their Waitlists.

farfallarocks · 21/02/2024 11:55

thanks @Louise78100 this all sounds like a huge amount of fun, sounds fab!
@CocoC I know 2 years ago someone who received a waitlist offer from Emanuel had 24 hours to accept which they did but they had seen the school. Is it a top choice versus your offers in hand?

Not prior to accepting but if you’re set on the school, you and DD will have many occasions to see it after.

@farfallarocks congratulations to your DC!

Do you know by any chance how many applicants wrote for St John's 11+ this year?

We are trying to decide whether we apply for 11+ or 13+ next year for those schools like Caterham, Epsom, St John's and Reeds which offer both entry points.

Thank you!

Hi, I think the 11+ vs 13+ is a tricky one and probably personal to the child. I have a child at St J who went at 11+ and I suppose you need to understand what will they do at the prep v what will they do at senior school? Then once you know that, which will your child prefer? My DC was ready and wanting to go to senior school at 11+, but others, I am sure, feel differently.

From a St J point of view:
13+ you will go straight into houses, where as 11+ you have experienced lower school. Meaning they get some say in which house they enter and have established friendship groups. However they do mix it up so that the 13+ don’t feel too like the new kids.
Then you are straight into the more ‘serious’ part of school. Years 7&8 have seemed like a lot of fun. They have done some lovely things together, including trips away.

Gymnogene · 21/02/2024 13:29

Thank you @Louise78100 this is really helpful.

Our prep prepares the boys for the Common Entrance exams in Year 7 and 8, which I understand is a stimulating and broad syllabus, and provides excellent exam/study skills etc. However it is only required by the 13+ boarding schools and to me feels old fashioned and redundant for those applying to day schools. Plus adding another layer of stress in Year 8, which I am not sure I can face after the 11+/13+ pretest! 🥴 We'd also love our DC to move into a coed environment sooner if possible.

Anyway, I'm mindful that this thread is for those who've done 11+ this year, and this is a totally different topic/debate which probably needs it's own thread! I think lots of prep school parents are grappling with this decision at the moment.

Following everyone's journeys on here has has been hugely helpful for our turn next year and all the best to your DC in their new schools!

WombatChocolate · 21/02/2024 14:09

Personally, I think that unless you are going to a 13+ school where everyone or almost all start then, it’s better to go at 11+ and begin with the majority.

13+ preps are struggling in yr7 and 8 unless they send most of their kids to 13+ schools - and there are fewer if those these days, now most of the day schools take in at 11.

Some 13+ preps have abandoned doing Common Entrance because the curriculum felt old fashioned and dull and didn’t replicate what the kids would be doing if they were in secondary. With pre-tests in yr6, very few schools, especially day schools require CE. It offer based on their own 11+ gets even for 13+. So on that basis, CE just is t really needed for most these days.

I also think it’s a different experience to be in Prep rather than Senior in yr7 and 8. There will be specialist teaching in the Prep but it’s not the same as having secondary teachers who teach A Level etc. Facilities can be good, but again unlikely to be the level of the senior school. And for me, most importantly, I’ve seen those in Preps feeling like they are left behind and just waiting - especially when they hear from kids who are in yr7 and 8 at senior schools and especially the school they will go to. They can feel they are missing out in friendship forming, being up to speed with the work and it can be really hard for the Prep to keep them motivated, especially when they already have their places based on pre-tests and aren’t reliant on the work they do in yr7 and 8.

Ive heard it said before, it’s best to enter any school at its standard, majority entry point, in the vast majority of cases. There will be exceptions such as those who will benefit from a smaller environment or who aren’t ready for senior school yet, but most are ready at 11 and if that’s when most will come in, I’d send most children then.

It’s a shame for 13+ Preps that don’t mostly feed boarding schools. I think they are fighting the tide really and even in the last 5-8 years, many have struggled as the appetite for 11+ and getting a place sooner rather than later, and senior schools take in at 11 when they either didn’t before or only took small numbers, change the landscape. There is something lovely about being the top of the school in a Prep at 12/13 and getting leadership opportunities etc, but I do think they miss out and when they join the senior school, it’s much harder to break into established groups and hit the ground running with GCSE study, if you haven’t familiarised yourself with the ways the school works etc through a more gentle start in yr7 and 8.

CocoC · 21/02/2024 16:44

@WombatChocolate totally agree with all the points here, very well put.

The Y7 and Y8 children in preps are sort of in limbo, just waiting.
Also, on the sports side, the facilities in a prep school are vastly inferior - it can't compare to senior schools who can field rubgy or football teams from A team to F team, and they don't get the chance to get into things like rowing.
And definitely agree with the point about friendship groups being already formed.

Gymnogene · 21/02/2024 17:10

Thanks @WombatChocolate and @CocoC - really good to hear your points of view, which definitely echo my feelings.

At our prep, less than 10% leave at 11+, because at least half the children go onto boarding or day that have a large 13+ intake. But I agree that the tide is changing and more and more will leave at 11+.

You have really helped solidify my thinking- thank you!

minipie · 22/02/2024 14:17

Well I’m now in even more of a quandary having gone to the offer holder days! 🤯

ALongProcess · 22/02/2024 14:28

@minipie which were you at and what's triggered the quandry? which has unexpectedly come up in your rankings?

Iffiyas · 22/02/2024 17:59

We’re exactly in the same situation! We did the Ibstock offer holder event yesterday and totally fell in love!! Putney made such little effort on their offer holder morning but Ibstock really made an impression with lots of lovely helpful staff and pupils answering questions, etc! DD and I are so torn….

minipie · 22/02/2024 18:56

ALongProcess Alleyns and Emanuel, we were almost set on Emanuel (much closer to us) but Alleyn’s was really impressive and now wondering if it’s worth the longer journey… probably not but…?!?

farfallarocks · 22/02/2024 19:01

Tough one @minipie and you can’t go wrong with either. Have you looked at gcse options and sports? Anything to differentiate it? Sports onsite versus not?
Maybe do the coin toss test and see which result disappoints you if you see what I mean?

Vista123 · 22/02/2024 22:03

@Iiffyas - don’t forget that Ibstock had to go beyond its waiting list last year to fill its yr 7 places, so maybe that’s why they’ve put so much effort into the offer holders day. Putney don’t need to and only took a small handful from their waiting list last year. That should tell you something.
They’re also quite different schools. PM me if you have any questions about Putney High as I have a DD there.

Ian85 · 22/02/2024 23:15

is anyone aware how the Latymer Upper waiting list is moving? do they ever go beyond their waiting list?

KGS also had an impressive offer holders date where they gave a red brochure with every kids name typed at the front of the broschure

Balhamdad11 · 23/02/2024 08:38

@minipie Alleyns is definitely the harder of the two to get into, and seen as the better school academically. Great choice to have though as both great schools

allaboutmychildren · 23/02/2024 09:34

@Ian85 did you attend the KGS offer holders this week? we were sent invite for 27th Feb. not sure why it's so late

hi there, yes we did yesterday . I have another friend also that is going next week , and i do nto think makes any difference since you have the offer so there is nothing to worry. I have to say when i went on the open date school looked so small with so many potential kids and parents around, but yesterday felt so nice and not small since there were there less kids. Lots of light also around

Emanuel waiting list is moving already!

Wow that's early! Good luck all on WL!

Sounds like schools all making efforts with offer holder events! I'm a lurker this year and next year DS will be sitting. Love all the info on this thread - so helpful.

Do all schools do offer events, and are they all the same sort of thing? Not sure what to expect if we are lucky next year!

I would definitely want to look round again if I'd been offered, do DC's get to do activities or are they just tours and talks? Not sure if it would make decisions harder or easier, but at least chance for questions must be helpful!

Good luck to all making choices and on waitlist! Hope you keep this thread open to keep us all updated in September!

mmhophey · 23/02/2024 11:05

Also lurking this year. Now looking into which schools to apply to. Regarding Emanuel, I got the impression from the open day that they aren't very good with sport for girls. My DD loves gymnastics and football and they don't offer that currently. Would anyone know if they offer any clubs for girls in those sports? (For fun) Also, how big is their drama provision? DD's second passion.
