GCSE to A-level grade conversion

stubiff · 06/02/2024 12:05

Does anyone have access to subject specific grade conversion tables, from GCSE to A-level.
Except Maths, as Noble has kindly posted it a few times.

Am aware of the Gov ones but for the GCSE it is the average point score not subject specific.

Thanks.

@TeenDivided
Thanks, it does.
Will digest and try to find the 2017-19 version (if there is one), so it avoids covid!

@stubiff just single year 2017 one

I also think this sort of document should be shown to year 8s or 9s when they pick their options so they can see ahead.

@stubiff no worries, I just had it saved so knew I could find it easily for you, it also helps anyone else looking too.

I've seen data from a few years ago which might be summarised as: kids score on average one grade lower at A level than GCSE in the same subject, but two grades lower in some tough subjects, like maths science and modern languages.
Comparing with the more recent data, the only subjects showing a full 2-grade drop are maths and physics (perhaps an effect of the curricular reforms?).
Students who are not hitting the ceiling with 9 grades should be advised their starting expectations for most subjects should be
8 -> A
7 -> B
6 -> C
but for maths and physics:
8 -> B
7 -> C
6 -> D
Starting expectations can, of course, be modified by hard work, or lack of it.
