Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on local schools. My son is in year 6 and has not got a place at the schools we were hoping -King Edwards, Witley being one of them. I'm planning to nicely ask them for feedback which might help us know why he didn't get a place.

DS missed alot of school last year due to having long covid. He has also recently been diagnosed with ADHD. He does well academically at school but struggles with exams. I presume he had a bad day on the exam day as he was expected to get in to KES.

We are planning to leave him at his current school until the end of year 8. Does anyone know of other schools locally that might be suitable?

We're looking for smaller class sizes and good pastoral care. I don't think he'll get into RGS, Reeds, or St Johns unless something dramatically changes in the next 2 years.

Also can he sit again for the schools he didn't get into at 13?

Thanks 🙂

Frensham Heights seems the obvious answer. Otherwise Churchers College.

Bin85 · 29/01/2024 08:46

Churchers is harder to get into than King Edwards.

How about St Edmunds , Hindhead or More House?

verygreengrass · 29/01/2024 10:27

Did you speak to the head? What was his/ her view? Was he prepped?

Does your current school go on past yr8? Maybe on option.

State - working high supposed to be ok

St Andrews, hoebridge, halliford, cfc , Canmore

Problem you have is that independents want you to keep up so if it's too much would a special school work? Canbury Kingston.

Good luck

verygreengrass · 29/01/2024 10:31

Did he get extra time too with the exams?

Thanks. I’ve been kicking myself that we didn’t look at Frensham Heights but they do take in year 9. He’s very sporty was my only concern but would need to chat to them.

Thanks for the recommendations. He’s at Hoe Bridge and doing well. He’s seems to have had a bad day when he took the exam -KES fed back that his Maths score was low and he didn’t interview well. I thought this was strange as he was chatting away in the room and came out after 30mins happy. Maybe he didn’t fit the school profile. Who knows?

HB is building a senior school but as far as I’m aware they’ve not started yet! It’s an option though.

He doesn’t need a special school at the mo but will look into More House as don’t know anything about it.

I think he needs time to settle having been unwell a lot last year.

yes he did. He got 25% extra time. He tends to rush and get things wrong because of this. He’s really capable at maths in school. Must have been a bad day.

Thanks I don’t know More House or St Edmunds. Will have a look

Maybe go and speak to Webster.
Did you get his cat scores yr 5/6
Did Webster not tell you a back up school to apply for? Maybe go and see him

He will want everyone to stay on as a child equals cash. Therefore prepping kids will be reduced ....

farfallarocks · 29/01/2024 13:36

Have you looked at Lord Wandsworth? Really loved it and I think there is a bus from Woking. I would follow up with King Edwards, almost sounds like they got results mixed up from what you gave described?

clopster · 29/01/2024 16:53

He had a bad day I think as far as exam went unfortunately. I know nothing about Lord Wandsworth I’ll have a look thanks 😊

Downsend ?

clopster · 29/01/2024 16:56

His cat scores varied due to health but he got 112 and 108 on his recent ones. Must have had a bad day. We weren’t given any advice on additional schools unfortunately

Those should be fine, we were told cat of 100 ish when we visited a while
ago.

clopster · 29/01/2024 17:11

I'm not sure what happened. Other scores previously were 104. It varied alot according to the day. Maybe they just didn't think he'd fit the school. They were very oversubscribed this year.

I didn't want to scroll past without sending you big hugs. I am aware of the struggles LC brings for kids and their families, and what a difficult time it must have been with the stresses of the 11+ added on top! So much recovery will happen between now and Year 8. If staying at your current school is an option, perhaps focus on recovery and gentle prep and then give it another go? Would Kingswood or Ewell Castle be too far for you?

clopster · 30/01/2024 12:50

Thank you for your lovely words. It’s been a really tough year. Definitely will be focusing on recovery and nurturing his self esteem.
My nephew went to Kingswood before it was a senior school. Definitely planning to look into it thanks 😊

Might be too far but Seaford College?

Helprequired5 · 31/01/2024 16:13

I think he should be able to stay at Hoe Bridge? I think Year 7 in 2023 is the first year that can go through to 16. But you probably know better than me!

StirlingRoy · 31/03/2024 05:49

Looking for some senior school advice. My DS is now Year 5 and doing academically well, CAT scores of 135. He struggles a lot socially though with friendships and gets very fidgety during lessons. He loves sport but is not a fan of contact sport at all. He has always loved Art, Drama, Theatre. We are able to offer him a chance at an independent sec school and have been told Reeds, RGS but have also been told they are high risk as a lot of pressure? We are new to the UK only moved here in 2017 (home is 🇿🇦 and 🇸🇬). King Edward, Halliford and Cranmore have also been suggested as better options vs the first 2.

Can parents share their experiences in these schools? We need an environment with lots of pastoral care and a school with a good arts program (DS has faced lots of bullying in a previous school which really rocked his confidence, he is getting stronger now but still a sensitive child)

Thanks so much!

incognito119 · 31/03/2024 08:45

I have a son at Halliford. Love the school and our son is thriving there - the pastoral support has been amazing. Sports and arts/drama are popular and touch rugby is offered for boys who won’t want to do contact. Feel free to message me

Isitovernow123 · 31/03/2024 20:58

Have you looked at Bohunt Liphook? It’s a very good state school.
