Husband trying to move child school without consent

dssam555 · 25/01/2024 16:00

my ex husband moved an hour away and our daughter lives with me all through the week and only sees dad every other weekend during term time. I have just found out he has applied to a local school near his new house and wants to move our daughter there.

firstly he did not inform me he was applying for a secondary school place.

secondly he has put down his address as our daughters main residence

will he get caught out for doing this or am I best to inform the council of what he has done.

our daughter is happy in her current school and would not want to move. It’s a through school so no need to move to a new school in seniors

Inform the LA to make sure she isn't offered a place with him as it's not her main address. They may have been led to believe that she's moving in with him (which may be his plan).

Inform the school he has applied to and the local authority that his address is not her main address, yours is.

Tell them that you are in the catchment area (I assume) of her current school, you are her main care giver and her resident parent, she is happy where she is and you have no plans to move to their area.

He sounds like a cheeky sod. What a bizarre thing to do! What might have led him to do such a thing? Do you have court ordered custody and visitation arrangements or is it all informal? Now might be a good time to get it all formalised if so.

He may get caught, but you should inform the LA just to be sure.

In cases of dispute the main address is usually the one where child benefit is claimed. I would inform all schools in writing that her main residence is with you and neither you or her want to change schools.
If necessary be prepared to go to court.
(This may be manoeuvres to stop paying child support, or just control).

Definitely tell the council

Tell both the school and the council, and offer to send them proof that you are her parent and proof of address. They won't want to touch this with a bargepole.
