History of art summer courses

DD16 is keen to do a history of art course as she’s thinking of the subject for uni (unfortunately her school doesn’t offer it as an A level). She’s doing fine art, English and French.

Does anyone know a good course? We’d really like one that’s as much like studying the subject properly as possible- maybe run by a uni? She’s happy to make it her summer holiday so don’t mind if it means a trip abroad.

thank you for any suggestions.

The Courthauld does short courses and summer school, both online and at their London campus. I've done the Intro to History of Art and it was very good (it was an evening programme though).

The Art History Abroad trips are amazing and will be populated entirely by 6th formers, and there’s also John Hall doing similar but much broader - art, history, culture, music etc - I’d give my eye teeth to do the 9 week course and I suspect it costs that much!
the courtauld course is less like studying at uni as the topics are very scattered and focused topic rather than a build of knowledge across a specific area or period. That may appeal but is not like doing an undergrad.
the v&a do courses where they focus on their collections- a degree course at most unis will offer a decent amount of teaching in front of the actual works which is why London is so good for the subject (obv Cambridge has the Fitzwilliam and Oxford the Ashmolean, UEA has a collection but not sure where eg St Andrews / Edinburgh go for in situ teaching. It’s pretty incredible to have access to the print room at the British Museum and to handle the works you’re learning about, or to stand in front of the actual paintings in the Nat Gall. (Weirdly doesn’t look like there’s much of that with the courtauld summer course despite their collection)

Has she looked at the Association for Art History website? They are v keen on promoting it as a school and university subject. Am sure they would love to advise a keen 16 year old.

A lot of University summer schools in History of art are aimed at adult/ retired learners so she might find herself the youngest by 30+ years.
