Independent Senior Day Schools - South East - Non-Boarding

Peyner · 19/01/2024 13:50

Can anyone recommend (or suggest, even if they don't recommend!), any senior schools (11+ or 13+) in Surrey / Hampshire / Berkshire / Oxfordshire / Gloucestershire that are:

(1) Co-ed
(2) Day schools (as opposed to boarding - at least in the vast majority of students)
(3) Non-religious (at least broadly)
(4) Academically selective

Thank you!!!

KES is Bath is worth a look. In Oxfordshire the academically selective ones will all be single sex.

Have you looked here:
https://www.isc.co.uk/schools/

Reigate Grammar (the College is sixth form only) hits all your criteria.

Caterham ( small number of boarders)

Epsom and St John’s have more boarders again.

Another vote for Reading Blue Coat.

Thanks so much, everyone.

I have looked on the ISC website but it doesn't filter particularly well between day schools and boarding schools that happen to also accept a small number of day pupils. It also doesn't help with the academic side of things - so whilst its good for plotting a number of schools on a map, it doesn't really help to narrow them down!

Reigate is sadly too far for us - otherwise looks great. Same with Berkhamsted.
Epsom seems to be a boarding school that takes day pupils.

Reading Blue Coat was one we dismissed a few years ago as it was all boys - definitely worth another look so thanks for bringing this to my attention.

#PermanentTemporary and #TennisSquare do you have children at Reading Blue Coat? Are you able to give any thought on how well the move to co-ed is going?

I'll take a better look at the other schools kindly mentioned too.

Thanks again!

Sorry no but I'm local to Epsom college and it's regarded as a day school with boarders but it has a long day and Saturday school and a new head starting in Sept. It's also very expensive and very very popular!

Flev · 22/01/2024 15:59

Portsmouth Grammar School?

LIZS · 22/01/2024 16:02

St Johns Leatherhead? Agree re. Epsom being regarded as day school although it has Saturday school and long hours iiirc

ArsMamatoria · 22/01/2024 16:03

The Abbey in Reading
St Helen's and St Katherine's in Abingdon

Maicon · 22/01/2024 20:37

St. Helen's and St. Katherine's is all girls not co-Ed.

DoThePropeller · 22/01/2024 20:44

City of London Freemen’s would fit the bill and I’d agree that Epsom College is a day school with boarders. Caterham a decent shout but if Reigate too far then I guess Caterham is too.

St George’s in Weybridge is catholic so may not suit.

You are looking in a very broad area. Where are you based or will you relocate?

Peyner · 22/01/2024 21:11

We're based in the South Downs, but willing to relocate as we have family towards Cheltenham that we'd love to be closer to.

I'll take another look at Epsom - I was wrongly of the impression that it was predominantly boarding. Ideally, however, we'd be a little further from the London school commuters...

CLFS is near Ashtead so perhaps not as far as you think. Lancing College or Brighton College too far?

LVS in Ascot

I (vaguely) know a couple of girls who have joined this year’s Y7 intake at Blue Coat. The girls are in a minority in the year group (with the only other girls currently being in the 6th form), so it will take some time to feel more balanced. As a result, sports fixtures are not great, as there is a very small pool for the girls, and it doesn’t lead to well-matched teams.
I don’t know about academics or pastoral matters though.
