Hi, does anyone know how academic Sutton High School for Girls is? It’s a lovely school with great facilities but I can’t seem to get a handle on how students perform at GCSE - in particular maths and science subjects. Really not sure if money will be best spent there or with a tutor at an alternative school. Does anyone have any insight? Thanks!

Hi, thanks for all the positives on Sutton High. My daughter is moving from a state to Sutton high in September for year 9. I’m a little anxious about her starting again with new friendships. Has anyone experienced new girls joining at this stage? The registrar is not very friendly on the phone and she won’t be invited for an induction day which is a bit strange. Im just looking for reassurance that the move in Year 9 will be a smooth one for her. Thanks

I’d ask to be put in touch with the head of year 9 and see if you can find out which class she’s going to be in and if you make any connections beforehand. Good luck but I’m sure she’ll be fine.

Reigniting this thread! Do you find there is any bullying at the school? I also read in the newspaper that they now allow girls to come to school with pink hair and nail varnish. Is this true? I wonder whether this is maybe too liberal and I could see it might exacerbate peer pressure.

Hi Lake9mo
I’ve not heard of any bullying at all. It may happen but I’m sure the school would deal with it very well if so.

The school has adopted the Halo code which allows girls to express themselves with their hair and so they can dye it and also wear nail varnish plus subtle
jewellery. You can read all of this in the school’s online brochure. In my daughter’s year very few of them do this however and it doesn’t seem over the top or pressurised. I think a lot of the girl’s parents don’t let them!

Hope that helps

Just curious, but what kind of 'bonnet' is the average 11 - 18 year old girl given to wearing at the school? I can safely say that I've never seen any schoolgirl in our neck of the woods wearing anything that could be described as such.

Not sure about the hair dye thing (actually, I think I am fairly sure about the hair dye thing...), but I think that it isn't uncommon for schools to allow clear nail varnish?

No expert, but I believe the under layer of a hijab can be called a bonnet.

Google satin bonnet - very popular for keeping curls/coils/afro hair frizz-free.

Thank you - that's really helpful. Maybe it's just me but the new code just seems a little too liberal to me especially with allowing any kind of hair dye and jewelry, to the point I might not consider the school now for my DD. Maybe I've become an old-fashioned and boring mum...But I would've liked the school to be on my side in preventing random hair dye and multiple piercings. Is there a minimum age for hair dye? I would've hoped that girls age 11 weren't allowed pink hair.

Vista123 · 05/11/2024 19:37

@Lake9mo
I’ve just asked my daughter and she said it’s mainly the older years where anyone dyes their hair and it’s just a handful of girls. (Lots of schools allow hair dye, but often just natural colours.) I really wouldn’t make it a deal breaker for the school, which is excellent in so many ways.

@Lake9mo honestly the uniform of a school and things like this pale in comparison with things like pastoral care, behaviour in lessons, support in learning, feeling happy and safe at school, being stretched academically etc. if you are worried about pink hair over those things, the focus of your search might be wrong - visit the school and speak to the pupils and see what they are like. I would far rather my 11 year old had pink hair and was well cared for at school than the other way around, I’ve just looked up the article - DD is at the school and happy but I hadn’t seen it. The focus is on supporting mental health and allowing freedom of individuality - I think that is positive.
