11+ Interview Questions - 5 min interview

Hi, DS has been invited to second round assessment at a Co-ed School in West London. It's a '5 minute interview' at the school. What are they going to ask/look for in those 5 mins? Seems really quick and wonder what they are trying to establish in such a short period of time. Any perspective/experience of the process greatly welcomed.

Given the time limitation it will probably be quite standard questions such as about why they want to come to the school, hobbies and interests and an opportunity to see if they have any questions. That's about all there is time for in 5 minutes!

Have a news story lined up, preferably one they can relate to.

My child’s done a few and they all asked

  • Why do you want to come here
  • Where else have you applied
  • Which school is your favourite 🙄
  • What book are you reading at the moment
  • What do you like about it
  • Tell me about your hobbies.

No one asked about current affairs which was annoying as my child actually loves reading the news.

I read an interviewer on here comment that the main thing they want to weed outnis the children who sit there staring at their hands saying “I don’t know.”

So don’t give your child answers to memorise (they’ll stare blankly at the interviewer while trying to remember what you said) but DO have lots of conversations with your child about the above topics in the day before the interview.

With short interviews, it is usually quick get to know you type. DD did a few interviews last year and not one person asked about the news....

But always good to keep up to date, have your dc watch newsround if they dont already at schoold and perhaps go over any current affairs with them just in case.

But most likely it is just to ask them questions about their hobbies, favourite subjects etc.
