Just flagging that Tiffin are consulting for their 2025 Year 7 policy, to give some leeway on admissions test results for disadvantaged applicants and sport aptitude. See bottom of this page: https://www.tiffinschool.co.uk/admissions/year-7-admissions/

They're also going to prevent in-year admissions to Year 11.

@prh47bridge are selective schools allowed to ban in year admissions to year 11? If they have a space, don't they have to fill it?

This is more complicated than it used to be. The latest Admissions Code states that PAN only applies to the normal year of admission. The intention is to stop schools from refusing admission to other years simply because they are full up to PAN, but it also allows schools to refuse admission when they are below PAN. Having said that, I suspect that an appeal panel would take a dim view of a school refusing admission in this situation.

Looking at Tiffin's draft admission arrangements, however, it isn't clear that they are trying to ban in-year admissions to Y11. It isn't entirely clear how 12.2 and section 13 interact, and I think it is worth raising this in the consultation. Section 13 certainly implies that they will admit to Y11 if there are places, so I'm not clear why 12.2 refers to "years 8 to 10".

But 12.8 says "Applicants will not be considered for entry to Year 11 except as a result of Tiffin School’s participationi n the Fair Access Protocol for Kingston Schools"

Hadn't spotted that, but it also seems to conflict with section 13. I think this is open to challenge and won't stand up in the face of an admission appeal.

At least one, and probably most of the grammar schools in Gloucestershire now include criteria for disadvantaged pupils. I know that in this county there was quite a lot of discussion regarding the number of children residing out of county now taking up grammar places at the perceived disadvantage of those living in county. I live in the city that is home to 4 of the 7 grammar schools in the county. Local primary schools in some of the least affluent areas do little if anything to help pupils prepare for the tests, so to my mind if children from such homes are able to achieve above the pass mark with little or no tutoring then it stands to reason that they have a better than average chance of benefitting from the teaching methods and opportunities available to them in the grammar environment.
