DD1 has just gone to bed in tears and asked me to wake her at 6 am for more revisin for her gcse mocks this week .
Please can someone reassure me that these marks def. do not count towards her actual gcse marks.
A friends mum told us that when her dd was taking her mocks last year she ended up with 3 gcse`s and that actually they were the real thing a year early.
Now dd is beside herself.
Cheers x

Is this yr10 or yr11?
Several courses now are modular courses, and our yr10s do 'real exams' in RE, ICT, Science and Maths.

The 'mock GCSEs' at our school are in December.

Sorry-she`s in year 10 .

I don't think there are any 'real' modules at the moment - maths was on march 3rd.. so I guess they are mocks. So they shouldn't count towards the GCSE. Schools use them to estimate the grades for the exam boards and they may be used for awarding a final grade in the event of absence from the real things.

Hope she gets a good night's sleep and worries less about it all tomorrow.

I wish some of my year 11s would worry a bit more!

Sorry - cross posted - strange to do GCSE mocks in year 10!

fakeblonde · 12/03/2008 23:04

Thanks worzella.
Yes thats true actually.
She is taking 3 or 4 gcses early at the end of this year-shes not part. bright at all but she tries so so hard she deserves to do well .
Cant understand why they doing them now either-i think it might go somewhat towards streaming them for foundatin or higher ???
Good to know its nothing serious though so i will def try and chill her out.
The poppet has tried so hard she has gone from the bottom set to lof years.Am so proud.!

Yes - maybe they are using them to decide on the level of entry. Part of the reason for them doing mocks is to prepare them and give them experience of handling pressure. I guess that's true for parents too!

Does she know how proud you are of her?

mumeeee · 12/03/2008 23:12

Mocks do not count towards their GCSE grades. They are a practise for the actual exams and teachersoften use the results to see wehter the students should be put in for the foundation or higher level Papers,

ladette · 12/03/2008 23:13

DS is year 10 and also has mocks this week. We have the opposite problem to you. Hopefully both our DCs will benefit from the practice, if in different ways.

Heated · 12/03/2008 23:14

Ours have done science GCSE modules this week. As pp has said, if they are mocks, they can be used to decide tier of entry.

Hwr, a fresh and alert dd who's had a good sleep, is going to emotionally feel better and be more ready for exams than an overtired one. Don't let her revise too much; as soon as they start getting stressed it's counterproductive.

Good luck to your dd, btw.

fakeblonde · 12/03/2008 23:20

Thanks everyone.
I shall make sure i tell her how proud i am worzella because i sometimes assume she knows .Thanks.
She so wants to be a primary teacher and i know she`ll do it and be fabulous.

one word of caution though, when a friend's dd suffered a burst appendix 2 days before her first GCSE her mock results were used as her actual GCSEs and certificates awarded as such, she has, I think 6A*s 6As but never sat a GCSE...
Of course this scenario is highly unlikely!

ladette · 13/03/2008 19:16

How's your DD today fakeblonde? DS had 3 exams today but other than saying they were "OK, grunt, good", can't get any more info from him!

SarahJones · 20/03/2008 15:14

sorry to join to this conversation so late, you may well have already got over this by now but I think it may well be worth your while getting in contact with the school if you are unsure of her exams and if they count. As far as I'm aware I agree that the mock exams are used as a preparation method so if you are concerned about your daughter then maybe you should talk to her about it and put these exams into perspective!
hope its all gone well!
