Year 10 - seeing a few really brilliant scientists speak. I really want to see them speak too.

  1. I don't think secondary have parent helpers (and I'm not DB whatever checked).
  2. DS would never talk to me again if I trotted along.

Just musing. Maybe the scientists have other events.

It's worth asking- I went on a few secondary school trips.....

If you live near a university you can see if they have interesting speakers at forthcoming public events

Cambridge!
I do go when I can, but actually avoid looking cos I can't go to everything what with life/responsibilities/other commitments.

Maybe I will then. DS might not want to go. He leans more towards non STEM subjects.

Our local private school does evening lectures. Another year or so, then I'd be happy leaving DDs at that time to go to them. Its only a 10min walk.

BlueChampagne · 21/11/2023 12:50

Offer to help next year?

Block out the Cambridge festival (14th-28th March 2024) in your diary now. There are always good talks then.

Ask if they want help, you dont have to be with your son at all times, you can take on another group of children!

CharlotteBog · 21/11/2023 15:45

Thanks all. I've emailed the organiser so we shall see.

Listen to the Life Scientific on radio 4/ BBC Sounds. They have a different world class scientist on every week.

I do!

I'm not short of finding stuff of interest, my main pull for this is Robert Winston and Steve Jones.
I am also involved professionally in Women in Science so am curious to see the engagement of young women in this cohort of year 10s and 11s.

Never actually went on a school-day trip when ours were at secondary (I don't think that any of them asked for parents to go), although I did go on a couple of Science Soc evening trips with DS1, one to an event at Cambridge and another to something at the Institute of Physics, which was in Portland Place then, a 15 minute walk from where I worked at the time, so I met up with the group there in time for the refreshmentsWink, but went back on the coach with them afterwards. I'm pretty sure that on both occasions, we parents formed a separate little group both at the venue and on the coach (we were there as paying members of the group, not parent helpers), so maximum enjoyment for us, minimum embarrassment involved for our offspring.

CharlotteBog · 21/11/2023 18:14

@MarchingFrogs I would be more than happy to go independently, but this is a an event for schools (GCSE age students), so no option.

Is it GCSE science live?, if so its good for the kids but not worth anything for adults. Steve Jones in particular has given the same talk for the past 10 years, i did email the organisation last year to point it out ( he rather cheekily says “ oh my data only goes to 2010 because the trend is the same” no mate, they are the exact same slides you put up in 2013 and every year since.
( as an aside we never take parent helpers in my school, sorry)

CharlotteBog · 23/11/2023 00:06

@JaffavsCookie Yes, it's GCSE science live. I've not come across it before.
Are you saying his talk is out of date?
Presenting the same talk year after year isn't bad in itself (unless a student goes in year 10 and 11), but out of date research obviously isn't good, and you'd think the speakers would be encouraged to present current or recent work.

The teacher hasn't replied to my email. DS2 doesn't want to go.

I feel like the lone enthusiast in the room!

Yes I am daring to say that the great Steve Jones’s talk is out of date, i also think it is bloody lazy to use the same presentation so many times without updating it, there is loads of great new stuff he could be introducing the kids too.
(we only take y11s as it is a lot of sitting still listening and have seen too many other schools y10s struggle with this)
Prof Winston is a very entertaining speaker though.

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/11/2023 18:25

Let's just organise our own school trip. I'm going to sit at the back of the bus with the cool kids.
