Normal kids only thread GCSEs

Allotment123 · 11/11/2023 18:40

This is a thread for normal kids and parents. DD is going GCSEs this year, hoping to get 44,55,66 to get into her chosen 6th form. Anyone else got normal kids who might do a bit of GCSE study, or might just spend the evening annoying their siblings or decorating their nails...

Yes a normal here who has decided they have a long list of things they need to adequately revise - is eyeing up a new desk, chair and PC!

Spirallingdownwards · 11/11/2023 18:43

Define "normal " I had 3 normal kids who got very different gcse results, 2 with spld who did better than the one without.

MammaWeasel · 11/11/2023 18:44

Normal??? Ffs

boxsetqueen · 11/11/2023 18:46

Normal?? That word is... A Choice. Care to explain what you mean OP?

Foxesandsquirrels · 11/11/2023 18:47

I think the Op means the not on Mumsnet kids aka the ones not getting 11x 9s.... It's not that personal

Bessica1970 · 11/11/2023 18:47

High achieving students are still normal. Their parents have the same problems too.

My son is getting 6s and 7s now on his mocks but is doing sod-all revision. It’s really irritating me, because he could potentially get all 9s if he revised. He doesn’t want to though, as he’s assuming he’ll get the grades he needs without revising 🙄

shorterthanaverage · 11/11/2023 18:48

What's a normal kid?

secondfavouritesocks · 11/11/2023 18:48

I think it is quite clear what the OP means, the 80% that are not in the top 10% academically, and don't have SEND

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 11/11/2023 18:49

I think she means of average intelligence and motivation

user1471447924 · 11/11/2023 18:49

Mediocre?

TeenDivided · 11/11/2023 18:49

I know what you mean OP. You mean not the mega bright, nor the absolute strugglers.
The support threads for GCSEs are a bit hit and miss sometimes they seem dominated by those expecting 888899999999 and other times they are more representative of 'average' kids (which I guess is the word you were aiming for).

TeenDivided · 11/11/2023 18:51

OP. Start again and ask about kids expecting 4-6s and it won't get derailed. Smile.
Or just go onto the y11 thread and keep talking about your DC, as that will encourage other similar to join in.
My DD1 got hard won 5Bs&3Cs a few years back.

NeedingCoffee · 11/11/2023 18:52

Yep, one here. She’s worried because her older sibling is in the irritatingly clever category but she has so much more going for her in so many ways and is going to smash her path in life regardless of GCSEs. She’s currently doing a bit of revision for mocks and really hoping for more than a 3 in Spanish, and 5-6s in the others

secondfavouritesocks · 11/11/2023 18:52

user1471447924 · 11/11/2023 18:49

Mediocre?

I have never met one of these. Not being academic does not make anyone mediocre. Academics being only a tiny fraction of someones personality.

Allotment123 · 11/11/2023 19:00

Apologies to those I have annoyed with the term normal, maybe average would be better. Those not in top sets, who don't know what they want to do in the rest of their lives, who might do better if they applied themselves. Not the ones who come Aug 2024 have 9 A stars but those we are proud of for being themselves, and if we give it a bit of perspective will be fine in the long run.

Ahh I took your post the wrong way and I apologise.

Are you sure your daughter can get into the 6th form she wants to go with if she gets what you have suggested of 44, 55, 66? I ask because my kids just finished their GCSEs last summer - our local comprehensive needs 7s in the chosen A level subjects. Its a big school too 320 kids per year group so I assumed that was normal.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 13/11/2023 18:11

FFS everyone knows what "normal" means in the context.

I hate whenever anyone says the word "normal", a bunch of wanky twats go "define normal" or "what is normal????" like we're all supposed to go "OMG you're so deep and thoughtful there is no normal statistically speaking so it's not a real thing and we should just stop using it to mean "about average-ish"."

Fuck off.

Reba767 · 13/11/2023 18:11

Our local college is grade 6 for the A level subjects you want to take.

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/11/2023 18:14

Normal????? Change the title op. 🙄

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 13/11/2023 18:15

“Normal” as in not the kids devouring War and Peace in Year 4, I assume.

DD seems to want to do well and spends about 30 minutes each evening making sure we see her revise (which actually looks more like drawing fancy borders with highlighters and creating pretty headings and subheadings for each topic), but she’s pretty content otherwise. I’m trying not to put too much pressure on her while also making sure she’s on top of things… it’s a balancing act!

Never a truer word spoke. Get to fuck!

Waitingfordoggo · 13/11/2023 18:19

@Ohnoooooooo, that’s surprising to me. Most of the colleges round here (our schools don’t have sixth forms so everyone has to go to college) are asking for 4/5s

It is definitely a good idea to check these things. But not all students doing A levels are going on to university and can still get good grades at A level just not good enough across the board for a university entrance.

Ds's sixth form is outstanding and has above average progress 8, they want 5 x grade 4s, some subjects such as science and maths want a grade 6 to continue to A level. The rest don't. They promote the progress of the individual and give everyone a well supported education. They have brilliant contacts and support for those who go onto working or apprenticeships as well as those doing A levels.
