Channing anti semitic graffiti

I understand no doubt the senior management will do everything they can to find the culprits. However is this a culture within Channing or is this a worry all other private schools might follow? I don’t necessarily ‘blame’ the school, they would never promote hate like this. However it is likely from conversations heard at the girls home or elsewhere. Who knows? Just wondering others thoughts on this .. where do we go from here?

So you all think this would have been written pre Oct 7th? At this school? I rather doubt it. I do find it all appalling. All killing of children is appalling. All the people marching at the weekend think it’s appalling too. ALL of it is dreadful and of course it affects people here. What if the guilty pupil has a dead relative in Gaza?

Do you think it's acceptable to write "Kill Jews" along with a swastika is acceptable under ANY circumstances? Is this what you teach your own children?

God help them.

White Europeans of Christian origin murdered my family and 6 million others. Does that make it ok for me to target white Europeans?

I don't deny that recent events have emboldened anti-Semites. That doesn't justify or excuse it. It doesn't make whoever did it any less disgusting.

I don't understand UK's "tolerance" on this topic. In my native country (cemtral europe, not germany), it would be a crime, investigated and pupil expelled. Happened when I was in highschool to one neoN twat. And we didn't even have jewish students as far as I know. It's also crime to deny holocaust and other proven genocides.

Who has said its going to be tolerated? I'd like to think that if the culprit is found they'd be expelled! I'm not sure though why it's more concerning that this is a private school, it's not only benefit bashing, council estate residents that hold racist views. Have a look at our government for a start.

  1. That's a huge assumption.
  1. Even if they do, so fucking what? If someone had relatives whi were killed or taken hostage in Israel and decided spray death to Muslims on a wall, would you be bending over backwards to defend them?
wisteriawindow · 08/11/2023 09:29

This thread has kicked off - but to bring it down a notch, I find it really shocking and sad that this has happened.

It's also VERY surprising. Channing has a very high population of Jewish kids, and if Channing is anything like other schools in the area (my DD is at Highgate), there has been an ENORMOUS amount of school input about the awful situation in Israel/Gaza, flagging the need for respectful discourse and calm understanding of both 'sides'. Assemblies held, emails to parents and kids, opportunities for children to discuss further and see counsellors should they be personally affected etc - it's really impressive.

Ignorance often leads to offensive views, but I doubt that would be the case for the teen wrote the graffiti. It's really upsetting and strange.

It's a school with a very high population of Jewish kids so I have no doubt they're taking it seriously. Equally a lot of parents there will have links to the papers etc so that's probably why it's ended up there. This wouldn't be in the news otherwise. Sadly things like this are written in school toilets up and down the country. Not necessarily aimed at Jews but overall just hatred towards minorities.

Err..."why will a lot of parents have links to the papers etc"? Surely not pushing any AS tropes here?

EasternStandard · 08/11/2023 11:28

I didn’t know of this so googled

That is shocking

Your last question is not needed

Pushing what tropes? I don't know what AS is.

PopPopMusic · 08/11/2023 12:00

AS = anti Semitic
Just wondering why you would assume a lot of parents will have links to the media?

I assume it only took ONE person to write the graffiti. There are Jewish protestors calling Israel a Nazi government. People are very angry. I don't think any amount of "balanced school assemblies" or access to counselling counteracts or rationalises the scenes from Gaza. The Israeli government are making it about Jewish people. So I don't think it is very surprising. Very wrong, yes. Studies show that some people still blame present day Muslims for 9/11, even ones who weren't born when it happened. People hold grudges and misplace anger.
I haven't seen anything further about this, and would be interested to hear what happens, so please if anyone local knows please keep us updated.

I'm sorry but your comment is AS if anything, not mine. I didn't make that assumption. I know that's the case. As I mentioned in my op, the school is known for having celebrity kids eg Jamie Oliver's kids, Mylene Klass etc.
This has nothing to do with anyone being Jewish or not. It's a very expensive school in a part of London where a lot of people in media live. It'll be full of kids who's parents have access to the right people in the media. If you think this is the only school this happens in, you're deluded. The only reason it's in the news, is because a parent has the links to put it in there.
As a PP said, it is very shocking given the large Jewish student population.

PopPopMusic · 08/11/2023 12:08

I apologize if this is the case, I wasn't aware of it being a media school, but there is a v common trope about Jewish people running the media so I jumped to the wrong conclusion, given the discussion on high number of Jewish pupils at the school. It's something I'm sensitive to as people have said it to me in the past and even when it's said with best intentions, it does play into some of the age old misconceptions. I have vowed to stand up to these things when I think I see them and have obviously made a mistake on this occasion.

I know that there's lots of hatred towards Jews and their' links' to media. It's absurd. However, that's why I made sure to say it's a school that people like Jamie Oliver sent their kids to. It is full of parents who know 'people'. They're not necessarily Jewish ones. Thanks for the apology though. It's a sensitive topic for everyone

I don't know what's more sad, that a teenager or teenagers wrote these messages or that posters like you twist yourselves in knots to justify it, do blame anyone but the perpetrators. The Israeli government didn't make some vile little shite do this, the Jewish pupils at this school haven't done anything to deserve this. It's not just anger and a "misplaced grudge", it's hate and violence. I hope everyone responsible is expelled, for the safety of other pupils.

Insuranceheadache · 08/11/2023 12:47

TizerorFizz · 06/11/2023 12:54

Look at what others feel
in reverse. Sadly it’s not hatred in one direction is it? Look at death numbers of innocent people in Gaza and possible war crimes. It’s truly awful from all of them but these people and their views are embedded in our society. It’s not going away any time soon. So many people are filled with intolerance and hatred now.

Hadn’t realised that the Jewish pupils at Channing had been killing people in Gaza. That does put a different spin on it.

FFS 🙄

You have misunderstood. I'm not trying to justify this AT ALL. It is absolutely vile and I said do in my post. I responded to posters saying they were very surprised because 1) it's a private school 2) lots of Jewish pupils 3) lots of access to balanced discussion. From a sociological perspective, the above factors do not negate prejudice.
I'm interested to see what (if anything) happens next. I assume in a state comp the culprit would be expelled immediately. The fact that the school is an exclusive private one with high profile parents makes it very likely that we will hear no more, which isn't acceptable.

Foxesandsquirrels · 08/11/2023 13:53

@feralunderclass "The fact that the school is an exclusive private one with high profile parents makes it very likely that we will hear no more, which isn't acceptable."

You're actually more likely to hear more because it's that school. Normally this stuff doesn't make the news. Additionally, it is not the norm to know what the follow up consequences are for safeguarding reasons. A lot of the time when a student is suspended, not even their teachers know. It is on a need to know basis and it's most likely only the safeguarding team and HOY that will know. When those kids return to school they are STRONGLY encouraged not to share what they've done with others.

I would have expected any school to immediately expel, rather than suspend, any pupil who was found to make such a statement. Nobody within the school staff would want to expose the culprit, especially one with a high profile parent who could turn it back on the school. However, a pupil suddenly leaving will make it fairly obvious to other pupils who it was. If there is a very high Jewish demography at the school then I'd also be expecting the school to be bending backwards to assure Jewish parents that this will not be tolerated.

They will be bending over backwards. Schools have to follow policies with regards to exclusions, you can't expect them to permanently exclude a pupil over this just because you think that's the right thing to do.

Yes of course policies and appropriate procedures need to be followed, but this is a hate crime and I'd like to think that warrants an expulsion rather than a 3 day suspension!

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 08/11/2023 22:40

@feralunderclass you write that "The Israeli government are making it about Jewish people". I'd say it's antisemites making it about Jewish people wherever they are in the world.
