Independent vs grammar school sixth form

My DD is currently studying Y11 at Independent boarding school. She wants to move to grammar school sixth form in 2024. She targeted Newstead Wood and Bullers Wood in Bromely.
Can anyone give me any advice about these schools.

My daughter has newstead as her first choice. Bullers is not a grammar. We were due to go to the open evening this week but we’ve all got covid

Both schools are well regarded. Have you also considered St Olaves as they are co-ed in sixth form - you’ve missed the open evening but are still in time to apply. If she is intending to study maths / STEM subjects perhaps consider the specialist state maths sixth forms.

DD recently left Newstead and had seven happy years there. She had the option of Westminster for sixth form but chose to stay at Newstead. They have a great range of A levels, good teachers and trying to improve facilities, some of which are tired but new music block and library extension were recent projects and others are planned. It is co-Ed in sixth form and it is over subscribed. Friends of DDs who moved to Olaves for sixth form did well but a good number wished they had stayed.

Thanks for your advice

St Olaves is also one of my DD choices.

How many AL subjects do they need to take? Any ECA will be available for sixth form students? I’m afraid that all students too focus on studying.

I missed the open evening. Can you share me the typical daily schedule for the sixth form students?
May I know what university your daughter finally goes to?
Because my DD is studying at independent school, we need to inform school 1 term in advance if we confirmed to move to grammar school. But it’s subject to meet the school requirement. May I also know if my daughter get the GCSE results that meet school requirements, does it mean she could get the place automatically?

Olaves they have to start with four A levels so it can be intense, NW is more fluid. NW tend to have 3 as standard (4 if one is FM). DD also did an EPQ which was talked about a fair bit in her Oxbridge interview.

DD used to have each of her 3 subjects most days, maybe one or two days she just had two, there would be study periods which she’d spend in library or common room, she would get privileges for doing well and usually had Tuesday pm off (based on her timetable, friends were different) and she would do her part-time job that afternoon (tutoring).

DD is in Y1 at Cambridge and before she started helped with their Oxbridge hopefuls and returned to the school in September to help deliver Oxbridge classes. Olaves send more to Oxbridge but I think that reflects that Newstead see the pupils more as individuals not ‘Oxbridge,/ Medicine or bust’. Downsides of NW, some buildings scruffy, too many pupils for the buildings, crowded corridors, challenging at lunchtime due to crowds and meh catering, whiilst there are boys in sixth form not many of them.

DD made good friends with those who came from other schools into the sixth form so they integrate well, but I don’t know how easy it was to get a place as someone coming in.

Hi PettsWoodParadise, thanks for much for your sharing.

Your DD is a very smart girl! She could manage her study and also do part-time job.

Except doing A level subjects, did your DD take any ECA in school? Does NW offer any ECA or interesting club for sixth form students? I don't like DD only focus on study, work life balance is important.

DD's current school also suggested to take 4 A levels (1 is backup). I am sure NW is a good school but I really don't know the procedure for getting an offer.

DD was involved in drama productions, model UN etc. she wasn’t sporty and didn’t play an instrument but there were plenty of opportunities if you were. She volunteered with a Brownie pack but that and her work were not school related.

For any state school, if you meet the entry requirements, they have to give you a place, so in that sense it is automatic. If you miss subject specific entry requirements, they still may offer a place, maybe for different subjects. You can hold as many offers as you like before results day, so hopefully you'd be able to get a place at a school.

I can understand it's difficult with giving notice, but if your DD missed her offers, would her current school not have her back? Most schools will show some loyalty to current students!
