D-Day Story in Portsmouth for 'A'Level History

DD has just started 'A'Level history - she tells me she is studying Churchill and WW2 at the moment.
We live in London, so can easily do trips to Imperial War Museum, Cabinet Rooms, etc.
With half-term coming up, I was wondering about other places to visit for a weekend break - was thinking about the D-Day Story in Portsmouth.
Has anyone been? Was it useful? And are there other things to see?
Also, any recommendations for a nice hotel to stay?
I've been to Portsmouth for work before, but that was a while ago and it was all organised for me.

It’s very small. It takes around an hour to see. However, Portsmouth is full of museums so you could combined it with all the others?

It won’t take long, but in Portsmouth you have the Historic Dockyard and all the associated museums - Explosion and The Submarine museum are in Gosport over the river. I can’t remember what there is specifically WW2. In terms of other things - Gunwharf Quays for shopping and restaurants. Southsea is lovely for a wander - the D Day Museum is there combine with cake at either the Tenth Hole or the Parade Tea rooms. I can’t help with hotels as we live close enough to go there for the day.

Portsmouth brilliant for military history. Recommend the very smart Premier Inn right next to the Historic Dockyard. There are other premier inns in Portsmouth but this one is best situated (although admittedly not for the D Day museum).

Portsmouth also has the Mary Rose museum which is amazing.

I remember seeing it back in the 80s but they've done a lot with it since then.

You can also visit Southwick House where the D Day invasion was planned - they have the original map there which was used to plot the positions of the ships. You do have to book in advance though.

I would agree with others. The DDay museum is very heavy on the military stuff. It might be interesting to him but probably not that helpful for A Level courses. It's also not massive. The Mary Rose exhibition is absolutely excellent though and I'd highly recommend it. Take him there and to see the Victory!
