DS's school day that he has done better than expected in his yr7 cats test. His primary school was rubbish, but he did well in his Sats.
They've sent me a chart, which I've attached, but no scaled score or anything. Can anyone tell me how well he has done please?

There are no figures visible on the chart when I click on it.

ScoobyBooby · 05/10/2023 20:08

First column is below average , middle (yellow) is average and last column is above average.

He did very well !

This looks like and exceptionally good CAT result 141 in two area and probably over 135 in both others.

The CAT bell curve graph explains what this means in relation to the general population but I think he would be in the top 1% of results.

Thank you for your help. It's weird they don't give the parents any numbers.
His primary school really gave me no indication that he was doing well, until his sats results in the summer.

It might be that he flys under the radar if he’s not extrovertly academic.
My older child has similar results and it’s recognised by everyone that he’s exceptional, my younger child just got similarly high scores recently and it’s come as a bit of a surprise to both me and his school.

Because they show potential it’s not really about what they know ‘about a subject’ but their ability to process information more generally.

My experience of primary schools is that if you are meeting expectations then they don’t pay much attention to you because they are so stretched getting those who need support up to the government mandated level.

Tried to delete the comment but wasn’t able too. Should have a delete option in this site or am I missing that

They give a prediction of their strengths. So they are part of the jigsaw.

Just curious as you mentioned surprise, how does he preform in assessments?

Because sometimes cat4 can mislead a little if the traditional assessment methods don't suit them.

Unfortunately a lot of education achievement reflects a learners ability to preform in exams within quite restricted boundaries.

@Marblessolveeverything he hasn't really had assessments. We didn't get told the results of his ks1 sats. In his ks2 sats he got good results; 120, 120 and 117.
Up until that point we had parents evenings and reports which said he was doing well, with some greater depth, but there has never really been any context.

For my sins I was a primary teacher briefly and now I am in third level.I am in Ireland so while we have Cat4 we tend to also have regular end of term/year assessments as well.

Sometimes the Cat4 can be very helpful in seeing where a learner is outside of traditional assessments. A lot of young teens missed practicing exam skills.

Glad he has done so well. It is a lot easier to support a learner on technique than content. I hope he continues to thrive.

Thingsthatgo · 06/10/2023 19:28

@Marblessolveeverything thank you. I really appreciate the help. Now he is in high school I have had more feedback and information in the first month than his whole 7 years at primary school.

DS is a bit nervous that they are going to predict him very high GCSE results based on his CATs and SATs.
