It is more of a worry to me, that this nonsense is the issue that the key note Education speech is about.

There is so much wrong with education in the UK at the moment, and THIS is what she chooses to make her speech about ??? Confused

Apparently the gov aren't imposing a ban, it's guidance to school that they should ban.

Which does fuxk all about the real issues in school

Bellossom · 02/10/2023 17:59

My childs school has 'banned' phones policy but it's fine in bag not seen or touched at all throughout school day

noblegiraffe · 02/10/2023 17:59

Oh great, now this absolute fuckmuppet of a government is panicking parents.

The government isn't banning anything. School policies generally allow for phones to be taken into school, just not used in school.

Needmorelego · 02/10/2023 17:59

It's ridiculous. Every school will already have a policy. Most are pretty much "switched off and at the bottom of your bag/in locker" type rules.
There is so much more the government should be concerned about with secondary schools.
Better SEN facilities.
Buildings that aren't going to fall down.
The unbelievably high amount of children who can't cope with school and have anxiety/mental health issues.
Over the top uniforms parents can't afford.
Constant changes to curriculum/exams - "T-Levels FFS".
Violence in schools.
Bullying in schools.
Children going hungry because they only have 20 minutes lunch break.
Dreadful toilet facilities.
And more......
Fricking phones are way down the priority list.

TwigTheWonderKid · 02/10/2023 18:06

Yes but introducing a policy which already exists in the majority of schools doesn't cost anything, does it, unlike everything else which desperately needs fixing.

They are running scared. I thought today's newly released 'Plan for drivers" was desperate enough but this is a new low.

Totally agree with Needmorelego but add staff recruitment at all levels, staff retainment, staff workload...

All my teaching friends can’t wait for it to come in
they waste hours and hours with problems and disruptions caused by mobiles

Most schools already have phone bans?

All schools have mobile phone policy's? And discipline policies shouldn't take hours out of every day

From what I’ve seen, it’s not usually a full ban on bringing phones in, more that schools control how they’re stored and used during the day. Some let pupils keep them in bags, others collect them or use secure storage systems to avoid distractions and issues in class.
There’s a bit more context on how schools handle storage here if useful: https://phonelockboxes.com/school-phone-lock-boxes-benefits/
