I was looking for a thread on this but couldn’t find one so thought I’d start one. It’s my second time going through this (now with DS2), and it was helpful last time having a thread to share thoughts and questions etc as we progress through the 11+ process. Bracing myself for round two….Just finalising list of schools. Good luck everyone 🤞

I did this last year for my dd and now getting back into it for my ds, who is year 5! What schools are you looking at? The ones that are not over an hour away from us are Emanuel, Kings, Latymer and St Pauls!

travelturtle · 27/09/2023 09:32

Mine is Y6 and older one is Y8 so it’s come round again quickly! We are looking at co-ed schools mainly (though may also do Hampton) so it’s Emanuel, KGS, Latymer & Ibstock.

Yes, so similar to me :) My eldest is Y7 and middle Y5. How is your ds with the prep? Is he motivated? I feel like we need to focus more, but I guess we still have time.

I've just started a thread, not realising this is here so I will delete my other one. This process feels so intense and scary. We are going for Hampton, St George's, KGS, Reeds and Latymer Upper but coming from a state school, I feel my DS is so unprepared compared to the prep pupils. We did the 10 plus but for just one school but are doing the 11 plus this year afresh.

Yes, it can feel a bit overwhelming when coming from state school. We went through it with my dd this year (she just started year 7) and my dc are in state school, plus we are not from here so it is all new to me! Just talking to the private school parents stressed me out. One advantage for my dc being at a state school, they feel no pressure. I think for the prep school dc there is a lot more pressure.

I think the main thing for state school dc is to understand what needs to be covered (depending on what school you are applying to).

It seems like thousands and thousands are competing for very few places too. My goodness.

Yes, but the way I thought about it was, someone needs to get a spot :) And everyone can only take one spot. Some dc are applying to 5-6 different schools.

travelturtle · 27/09/2023 21:07

@lolo99 we are state primary school too. Went through it with my eldest 2 years ago so it’s our second time round. It does get a bit overwhelming at times, but on the whole the kids we know all got something they were happy with last time round. The numbers are scary, but the schools do over offer a lot because there’s so much overlap between the schools children apply to. They can all only accept one place in the end!

Thanks for starting the thread. We have a dd in year 6 and are applying to Putney High, Wimbledon High, LEH and Surbiton.

Lizardlegs · 29/09/2023 18:05

Glad to have this thread up and running, thank you! We’re prep school parents but it’s still stressful and overwhelming, especially since I’m from another country and DH is a product of the state school system. 🤪

So hard to really know just how good your child is comparatively - what a minefield

I felt like this at the start because I really had no idea and the school does not give you any idea. I felt my dd is bright, but I am sure most parents think this so felt lost. Atom learning helped me in this area, as when they do the mock exams on there it gives an SAS score which looks at their age and marks against other dc doing the same exams similar ages.

Iffiyas · 01/10/2023 10:46

Can anyone here help shed some light on what the second stage of LEH exam consists of and what sort of CAT scores help to get into LEH? I know they’ve had bulge years in the past so I’m hoping they may over offer again. DD CATs are 127, she’s very good at math but her English is not as good! Thanks

Problem solving and GPS is my understanding.

Done it once but finding hard to get the energy and motivation to do it again with my year 5 child, hope not too late !

frivlot · 01/10/2023 16:46

.

Digletpiglet · 01/10/2023 20:00

Following this with interest - thanks for setting it up. DD is in Yr6 and already has guaranteed place for Yr7 so thankfully no 11+, but DS is in Yr5 and likely to get guarantee for Yr7, but debating whether to also sit him for Tiffin, Hampton and KGS next year so trying to understand the 11+ process now. Good luck to everyone preparing for exams at the moment.

Iffiyas · 02/10/2023 10:59

@Digletpiglet where is her guaranteed place?

I am feeling the same way. Just too much going on atm w the dc sports etc. Zero time over the weekend to do prep or hw.

flutterby1 · 05/10/2023 07:54

Is it too late to start ?

When is the exam? If it is December this year then it is cutting it close. But if your dc is focused and bright then its still possible. But I would think they would need to spend at least 30-60 mins a day during the week and weekends 2-3 hours a day to catch up with everything.

flutterby1 · 05/10/2023 09:31

September 25... but not done ANYTHING! Average attaining child so far but can work in that!

PreplexJ · 05/10/2023 10:13

"Is it too late to start ?
September 25."

If you mean 2023 then yes it is too late.
For 2024 are the dates finalized?
