Hello All,

I am obviously very stressed up, just recently moved to Birmingham (new job), have a DC in Yr 11, only offered space at Shenley though on waiting lists in 5 other schools.

DC has not started today, due to start soon, I am skeptical and sad about the whole thing. Does anyone have any fresh update as reviews I have read aren't very good.

Really don't know what to do at this point, it's a critical level, yr 11.

Thanks in advance...

Thank you so much, yes Selly Park seems to be more convenient,

Commuting time is just 20 minutes, Shenley about 71 minutes.
Options, she wants separate science, music, and food technology (Nutrition), Shenley does not offer any of those.
Type, she wants a girl's school

There are definitely more pro's at Selly Park, only it seems to be more Muslim learners ... 😢

She has gone to Selly Park for testing, will possibly start tomorrow.

Wish us luck 🍀

Shenley doesn't offer music?

That is sad, my husband used to work in the music department and it was thriving back then.

I’m fairly local to there and I hear nothing good about Shenley. To be fair there isn’t any massively good senior schools in this area IMO. We have the choice of Colmers, Waseley and Balaam Wood….all of which are fucking dire….but my DCs attend one of them. It’s about time we had some improvement on the state senior schools this far south of Birmingham.

Good luck with Selly Oak it sounds as if it would be a far better option in almost every respect.

You must feel very relieved to have an option.

It's sad there are kids stuck in schools like this with such an appalling reputation. So much for state education offering everyone the same opportunities Sad

Sorry I mean Selly Park not Selly Oak

Sounds like Selly Park is the one.

Don’t worry about the cultural and ethnic make up of the school, your DDs education is much more important than worrying about, what I would consider, such trivial matters. Plus think of all the experiences and learning she will get from another culture she wouldn’t have had otherwise. Win win really.

Hope the testing goes well and hope your DD enjoys her first day tomorrow. I’m really glad it’s worked out for you.

So true, not much is being done at all. Sadly the young generations are being set to fail. We need real leaders who are passionate about young people.

Honestly do not worry that there are a lot of Muslims at the school... over all I'd say that's a good thing. Our general experience is that their families are hard working and driven and their children are usually the same.

Your DD will find the majority of them come from families that really value education and that will instil a culture throughout the school. For goodness sake don't let her go in with the idea that lots of Muslim learners is a bad thing - far from it in our experience.

How about bournville?

Winter42 · 09/10/2023 21:45

Are you too far out for Ormiston Forge Academy in Old Hill? I work there and it's a decent school. We have lots of new starters throughout the year and they seem to settle well. It's a friendly school.

listsandbudgets · 10/10/2023 09:00

@OP how is she getting on now? I hope she's settled in OK at Selly Park.
