GCSE reviews news

I know there are a few of us who have requested reviews of GCSE papers or thinking about it so thought it might be useful to have a place to share news.

We have got scripts back for both English Lit and Lang for DD and her English tutor is having a look to see if a review is worthwhile. She was predicted a 9 and got 9s in mocks and came out with a 6. Once he’s had a look, we’ll make a decision.

Also got scripts back for Chemistry and I’m sure a 6 mark calculation that has been scored 0 should have been awarded some marks (and she’s only 1 off the boundary) so will have a closer look at that later.

Marks can indeed go up, they can also go down, which is why is worth getting the script first to check if it is worth it, and also looking at the grade boundaries and where your dc’s marks lie in relation to those.

True, in DCs case he was one off a grade 7 in Maths. Not doing maths at a level and not needing any higher grade. School suggested a remark because he was predicted a 7 and maths was the only GCSE where he wasn’t typing. His pen work is not very legible because of disability. So the only concern I had was if it was worth the cost. Quite glad we did it

DS has just had his English Lit review back, and paper 2 has gone up by 10 marks, which does improve his grade. It's definitely worth doing. He was either 2 or 3 short of the grade boundary, but I can't remember which 😁😁😁

tobyj · 29/08/2024 20:18

Which exam board was that @gingercat02 ?@g@gingercat02? And congrats!

gingercat02 · 29/08/2024 20:24

AQA, I'm amazed how fast it was!

NorthernGirlie · 29/08/2024 20:30

We request permission to download papers within marks (Maths) and double chexk the exam marking. Each question is marked by different markers so there's definitely room for marks to change.

We're offering November re-sits for any within 6 marks for Maths and English too this year

College rather than school though.

tobyj · 29/08/2024 20:44

Thanks @gingercat02 . Different exam board from ours, but still encouraging. DS is only one mark off the boundary.

hopeishere · 30/08/2024 22:08

I'm in NI and we put in for a remark and it came back today and it has gone up a grade.

Shrewsbury247 · 31/08/2024 09:51

NI here too, have requested remarks just yesterday for 4 papers which are very close to grade boundaries, hopeishere do you mind if I ask which board and how long it took?

hopeishere · 31/08/2024 10:39

Hi, it was CCEA and we put the paperwork in last Friday and got it back yesterday. It was Spanish. I do wonder if it was an adding up error rather than a marking error for it to come back so fast. We can see he got an extra two marks and that changed the grade.

Shrewsbury247 · 31/08/2024 10:56

Thanks for this hopeishere we requested on Thursday just past so might hear something next week.
It’s so frustrating being one or two marks off the boundary which can make a world of difference to options for year 13 😭😭

tobyj · 05/09/2024 17:33

Just got result of English Language review. One mark off boundary, went up two marks, so gone up a grade.

MysticCatLady · 05/09/2024 21:59

That's fantastic @tobyj , congratulations!!!

Cloudhopping · 06/09/2024 18:55

Just got my dds OCR English Lit review back (only submitted one paper). She went up 14 marks!!! Can't quite believe it. Went from a 6 to a very solid 7. So happy for her as she was disappointed by her initial grade, but also questioning how the first examiner could have got it so wrong!

tobyj · 06/09/2024 19:19

Wow, that's amazing! (And awful at the same time.)

RachelGreensHair · 07/09/2024 05:00

How long are people waiting for the reviews/checks?

practicepracticepractice · 07/09/2024 09:06

AQA submitted on Tues and not had back yet. I saw someone else post further up thread that they got AQA back quickly. I expect subject and volume makes a difference.

School told us within 20 working days. DS English Lit was back in a week (went up by 10 marks) and maths a few days longer (didn't change). 2nd maths paper still awaited. It went in on 30 August

MysticCatLady · 07/09/2024 09:16

OCR History took 6 days and went up a grade.

AQA English language and literature were submitted on Thursday 29th, no news yet.

gingercat02 · 17/09/2024 13:12

Second maths paper came back last week with no improvement. Paper 3 gone for review now.
