Revision tips

My GCSEs were a very long time ago my revision consisted of a Hope & prayer, sleeping with my school books under my pillow and a cursory glance at the books the night before.

DD is going into Y10 this September & I’d like to be able to support her and give her revision tips as I think she’ll struggle in some subjects without.

What things have your DC done that you would recommend?

Make it active.
Not just rereading, but drawing mindmaps / making revision cards, then trying to recall. Using online tools like seneca. Doing practice questions (save whole papers for later.)
Make decent revisions aids for end of module tests so they are there and available for end of year 10 exams or mocks.
Look at where you drop marks in tests to inform revision for next time.
Learn a week out, then review ongoing rather than cramming the night before. If you get the chance learn a month out.
The more seriously you take tests as you go along, the easier you'll find final revision as you will half know stuff already.
Try different techniques out in y10. (I am constantly surprised by posters asking for revision tips for summer of y11 - best ways to revise need to have been sorted out before then.)

I would recommend buying a copy of "Teach yourself how to learn" by Sandra Yauncy McGuire. Very few young people are taught how to learn so they have ineffective study strategies such as just reading and highlighting.

I'd also recommend sharing this with your daughter: ncase.me/remember/

Hi,

In terms of revision, I'm struggling to motivate my teenage son. He listens at school, but in terms of independent revision he is just not interested. The only resource that I have found has really helped him (with English) is a specific revision guide. His teacher recommended it, and since he's got it, I've seen a real positive improvement. Apparently the book gives a clear structure, all quotes annotated and model exam answers so that he can see where he goes wrong when he does his own. Even his teacher uses it to teach from...

The only problem I have is I can't see any other books for the other texts he's studying. The Macbeth is great. If anyone knows how I can get the others (An inspector Calls, Power and Conflict Poetry and Jekyll & Hyde) that would be greatly appreciated.

I had to order Macbeth from the website (https://moduspublishing.com/books/) but there seems to be no others... It's the best £12 I've spent!

Any help welcome....

Thanks
