Re-sitting GSCEs along side a full time job

Does anyone know how we would go about this and whether its a legal requirement if he has been offered a full time job not dependent on Maths & English grades?

How old are they? If they're between16-18 there must be some education in there- possibly an apprenticeship. So they can't be in full time employment.

Yes, they do have to resit.

If they are 16, for the job to be legal, it should have a significant "training" element e.g. apprenticeship or similar. If the training is through a college, they'll likely organise GCSE resits.

If that's not the case, then you can resit as a private candidate- or it may be worth looking for some kind of evening course- again, a lot of FE colleges offer this.

I can tell you what I know.

To get free lessons at college in Maths or English you have to be on a 'full time' (ie 3 days a week really) course / apprenticeship. That is for y12,y13,y14.

Once you are post 19 on 31st August you can access Adult Education for free if you haven't got your English/Maths.

I know this as we have fallen into a funding black hole for DD who is 'y14', but not going to do a full time course this year but we'd still like her to do English.

Teendivided I know from other threads your DD has an EHCP, so there shouldn’t be a problem with funding. The provision needs to be in the EHCP and then it can be funded, via EOTAS if necessary.

You'd think that wouldn't you.

D's plans for this year fell through on the last day of term and when I ot my hed round it I asked for an emergency EHCP review. That hasn't happened yet but the LA is meant to be finding out possibilities from local colleges. (When I contacted them they all said 'needs to be on a full time course' otherwise we won't get funding.) And then of course everywhere shut over the summer.

It is on my 'to do' list for tomorrow.

DD doesn’t need to be on a full-time course or even attend college at all.

Has the LA agreed to an early review but not held it yet, refused to hold one, or not replied to your request?

Even next year the 16-19 funding rules will apply to DD as they apply up to 25 for those with EHCPs.

TeenDivided · 24/08/2023 15:26

Well not held and not refused, so I guess not properly replied!
I know in theory it should be funded/arranged, but it is the practice.
To be honest my ideal would be a 1-1 tutor 2 hrs a week and then sit it in person at a college preferably in January.
Because we were late to EHCPs (she only got one in y12) I'm not well up in how to make the system actually work for me.

(Sorry for the diversion OP.)

If the LA has not responded email the Director of Children’s Services. As well as discussing the early review ask how they plan to deliver anything specified and quantified in F as per s.42 CAFA 2014. Your ideal could happen, but it would need to be included in the EHCP.

Sorry for the derail, OP. I just wanted to let teen know funding doesn’t have to be a problem.
