We are moving to Oxford from the US. Looking at options for A Levels for 2024. My daughter is a national-level swimmer so looking for a school that offers swimming. Alternatively, can you recommend a Swim club in Oxford or within 20 miles? Thank you.

The independent schools offer swimming but probably not at the level you are looking for. Not sure any of the state schools in Oxford offer swimming. City of Oxford or Wycombe District are probably the clubs to look at.

Sport in the UK works differently to what you will be used to in the US.
I'd focus on finding the right school, and find a swim team at a public pool - or maybe Oxford University /Oxford Brooke's Uni.

Any reasonably sized town or city in England (including Oxford) will have a club that can support an elite level of swimmer, it’s a popular sport.

But schools - generally not. Unless you’re boarding at Millfield or Plymouth.

Honestly, if my child was already national level in a country the size of the US, I would either not move, or one parent not move, or look at boarding in the US. She must surely already have coaches and be on a performance pathway? I wouldn’t taken her away from that.

We don’t combine school and sport like in the US. Sport is outside school for the most part - eg at the county/national levels.

If you Google “swim England performance pathway” you’ll get info on making the cut for elite training. The highest level is run by British Swimming rather than Swim England, but start with the contact numbers for the latter.

You don’t actually say whether you’re looking at state (free) or independent (paid) schooling. Both can be very good at supporting athletes in terms of time off, less so the academic catch up needed some times. Definitely sound out your school potentials about how they manage elite athletes now. My friend’s daughter is performance pathway for GB gymnastics. School is great at accepting any time off she needs, but it’s up to her parents to make up the academics.

You need to check UK regional swim squads websites and the time their swimmers are showing. If your DC is US National level their US swim coach could check and see which UK near Oxford swim squads are and which coaches to approach. Check England swim squad levels, since UK have England teams, Scotland teams, Wales, N.Ireland teams. Also, there are not many Olympic size pools in UK, so if your DC is used to swimming that size it need to be back up via holiday swim camps in those pools.

@bebehappy2023 , if your budget allows and you are serious about her swimming then you might want to consider a boarding school like Millfield that has a swim programme.
Also are you considering a US university after age 18 on a swim scholarship? You have a lot to consider when making the move.

ElthamLemur · 21/08/2023 22:33

How can she do A levels in 2024 if only moving now? They are usually a 2 year course? And that’s without the swimming taking up time..

Assume it is year 12 entry for 2024.

We live not far from Oxford and my close friends daughter was a national swimmer the realistic choices st sixth form were board at Millfield. or Wycombe. The chose Wycombe and she went to John Hampden Grammer in Wycombe like most of the swimmers so that it made travel for morning and afternoon training easy.
But if you are looking for sixth form you need to consider that she will not have done GCSEs and our education system is very different.

There aren’t swim schools in Oxford. City of Oxford is a good club, or Wycombe like others have said (with a 50m pool) but again, it’s a club not s school. Good local schools on both towns though. Swim schools are Millfield or Mount kelly, but likes from Oxford or you have to board. You do need to be at decent national level for those though or she’ll be totally overlooked.
Good luck - we have recently been through this (boarding) so happy to help if you need more info on this.
