Calculator for maths!

Our son starts secondary school September. When the older boys started (a long time ago) the school sold calculators which you could buy when they had an open evening so most of the kids had the same one. I guess this made it easier as the buttons would all be in same place etc. They've stopped doing this now so I know he needs one but will any do or does someone have a recommendation? I don't think he needs an all singing all dancing one just one that will do the syn/cos/tan thing?

I got this for my DC. Apparently they need the complicated bits for GCSE so it's probably better to buy this than get a simple one for y7-9 and a complicated one later.

Thank you 😊

That’s the one our school recommends/requires from Y7 too.

LetItGoToRuin · 31/07/2023 11:53

Ours didn't need a calculator until the final term of Y7, and the teacher made recommendations then.

Surely the school will recommend one?Schools will sell direct to students as well so they they all have similar

I assumed this too as this was what happened with older ones when they went there. We bought them at an open event for new students so most of the kids had the same. For some crazy reason they don't do this now just tell you that you need to buy one

A good calculator can definitely make maths less stressful, especially once topics become more formula-heavy in secondary school. A lot of students rely too much on advanced functions though, so it really helps to stay comfortable with mental maths alongside calculator use. I’ve seen parents mention similar concerns in other education forums as well. Interestingly, simple conversion tools show how helpful clear, easy-to-use calculators can be when they’re designed to simplify information instead of replacing understanding.

There can be quite a difference between some of the calculators in how to find some of the functions, so it's well worth checking whether the school recommends a particular model.

A decent scientific calculator really makes a difference once they start tackling algebra and trigonometry. Casio models are usually reliable and easy to get used to, especially for secondary maths. I feel the same about everyday number tools in general clear layouts save time and avoid mistakes. For salary calculations in Italy.
