Grammar schools near York

Hi
We are likely to be moving to York in the next year and want to be in the city itself ( for work/ transport)
We're looking at grammar schools but the nearest seems to be over 20 miles away in Ripon. Are there any nearer?
Does anyone have success stories of their child managing to get a place in any of the grammars whilst living in York?

There is Information about the various grammar schools in the country on the elevenplusexams site.

Yorkshire:

Wherever you are living (doesn't just apply to York / Yorkshire), whether your DC would get into any school, including grammar schools, depends on how they would be ranked according to the school's admissions criteria and whether the places are filled before reaching their position on the list, with the added proviso for grammar schools, of course, that they have to be of the academic standard required.

Ripon Grammar is the nearest grammar school to York. The last distance admitted last year was just over 20 miles. So unlikely to gain admission from York City.

North Yorkshire is not really a grammar school county. There are excellent fully comprehensive schools in York and North Yorkshire. Have you looked at these?

WhiteFire · 16/07/2023 16:09

We don't really do grammar schools up North, instead we have true comprehensives with some better than others. If you are currently in a grammar area that is probably hard to get your head round, but a comprehensive in these areas will have a true range of abilities.

Lots of good schools in York, no grammars. You can’t expect a kid to commute from York city centre to Ripon, there are no trains, and (asfaik ) only 1 bus runs the route, it isn’t very frequent , takes about 80 mins and then there would be a 20/25 min walk to the school once they got to Ripon.

Agree with this.

You'd be mad trying to send a child from York to Ripon, even if they'd accept her. I have a DD in Fulford, which isn't selective but is still a good school academically.

ElegantPuma · 21/07/2023 17:06

Fulford has an outstanding reputation. OP, see if you can buy a house in its catchment area, but be warned - they are expensive!

ElegantPuma · 21/07/2023 17:08

Oh, and don't be mislead by Tadcaster Grammar calling itself a grammar. It isn't. I believe the name is used for historical reasons.

MummyJ12 · 21/07/2023 17:32

Tadcaster Grammar is a comprehensive as PP rightly posted.

They have boarding facilities at Ripon Grammar. A friend of mine’s DS goes, they live in a village just outside York so it is feasible. He’s very happy and a high achiever, he’s really enjoying it.

Fulford have an excellent reputation, although some parents who have children there aren’t impressed with some aspects of it, it’s one of the best state schools in the area and gets good results. Villages that are in catchment for Fulford such as Escrick and Dunnington are much more affordable and lovely places to live.

All Saints is excellent for pastoral care and has a smaller feel as it is split into two sites.

My DD goes to St Peter’s. It’s independent but worth the money because she’s super happy there. It’s very competitive to get in though as there are always way more applicants than there are places. Bootham is a non-selective independent.

Most areas in York have astronomical house prices. You can pay 2 million and not have much house or garden! You get better value in a village on the outskirts. If the house looks good value it’s going to be because it’s in one of the not so great areas…..

Mumoftwoinprimary · 21/07/2023 18:11

York is “expensive for the north”. Because it is lovely.

But as someone who moved here from the south I can comment that it is not that expensive though. You can get a very nice house for a lot less than £2m.

Peter’s is selective but not that selective. From the kids that got in from dd’s primary I would say those that got in eventually were “above average in an above average primary” but they didn’t have to be anything special. That includes those who got in through the waiting list though - harder to get an offer straight away. (Although still not exceptional - just comfortably above average.)

Bootham is vaguely selective but not very. (Need to be hitting expected targets.)

MummyJ12 · 21/07/2023 19:15

York is very lovely @Mumoftwoinprimary 😊 I feel very lucky to live here.
OP, hope you enjoy it when you move here too. Good luck with everything.

What is going on at Ripon Grammar? A crazy blogpost popped up on my Facebook page from a “whistleblower.” I’m surprised the writer isn’t in court for libel.
