GCSE Eduqas English Tutor

Could someone please help me find a really good English GCSE tutor for a year 10 girl who is struggling. She feels like she doesn’t know how to analyse, so loosing marks. And to add stress on top of everything , they are doing Othello for GCSE as well ( according to her, normally it’s an A Level text)
I have had a look online, there are so many oxbridge students, is that going to be good enough? Finding an examiner who does Eduqas proving to be very difficult.please share your tips for finding a good one or better recommend a good tutor.
first timer going through GCSE 😣and I know this is only a start.
Thank you!

If possible I'd go with a tutor who is or has been a teacher (even if they haven't taught Eduqas, the assessment objectives are basically the same amongst exam boards). Try Teachers To Your Home.

I teach Eduquas and think it’s really important to find someone that knows the board. There are very specific ways to answer the questions in Eng Lang. Even if someone is an Oxbridge English Graduate they wouldn’t necessarily know how to answer the questions on that paper. We actually tell
out students not use generic English revision sites as the advice can lower their grade

Thank you both. I have registered with the one you recommended @doglover90 .
@Whatames thats what I thought, and thanks for confirming. To be honest, I have left her on her own, she manages all other subjects, and in a good grammar school. And only recently raised concerns about English. Their school only ever did the end of year exams in year 10 and that’s when it I became more clear. Hope I could fine someone who is teaching or marking Eduqas, at least for a few lessons

@Newlease I know you are asking about a tutor but I thought I would add this in. I am not sure if she has finished for summer school wise or if school is still open. If it is still open I would arrange an urgent meeting with her English teacher and get them to provide you/DD with the resources on how to analyse and talk you through it as an adult, so in effect you are going to teach your DD at home the skills she needs. I did this with Ds1 and History because it was about exam technique and not knowledge but the exams were new so no past papers etc. There may well be things already in her English book that she has forgotten about.

Othello wouldn't be on a GCSE paper unless they thought it was teachable to GCSE students. I did Romeo and Juliet in my degree, both of my children did it for GCSE, they just do it to a different level.

Mine did Educas for English Lang but AQA for Lit. What I found helpful as a parent was looking at past papers and their mark scheme so you and your DD can see exactly what they are looking for. There will also be an examiner's report about that exam series and how the students performed. Ds2 and I worked our way through these, printed off the extract so he could highlight bits like it was an exam paper and we did it together for the first 2 papers. Answered each question one at a time then looked up the answer to see how good his answer was and made sure he knew what they were looking for.

Don't overlook YouTube as a resource for this too, there are Educas/WJEC tutors who put their stuff online. BPC English is one we watched but as I said my sons only did Educas for Lang not Lit.

FYI my dc did Othello this summer for igcse English Lit. Yes it's annoying the study guides are for A level but the way the Cambridge igcse Eng lit paper options are structured he didn't have to learn any quotes just understand a passage in the exam and comment on it.

Hi - I teach Eduqas.

There are a LOT of excellent ‘blended learning’ resources on the website.

Also, for English Language there is a great Workbook that is produced by the Exam Board.

for Literature, she really needs to know the texts as well as possible. Watching the plays and adaptations, reading through study guides, thinking about characters and key themes all the time. She will also need to know some key quotations, but it’s just knowing the texts back to front that’s the first step.

Thanks so much for this. Very helpfully. Unfortunately the school closed last week, so couldn’t get any help from teacher. DD also is not very impressed with her teacher ( probably because there are so many grade 6and 7 in Eng in past few years GCSE results in her school, where all other subjects tend to 80% or more in grade 8/9.) I know she shouldn’t be judging with that, but I can’t help worrying about it either, when you see it listed on school website like that.
She is happy to go over things in summer, so will definitely check YTube resources

you all are being very helpful.
I also have few DM’s with recommendations, but no idea how to vet them/ continue with out any proper checks.
Many Thanks for all you replied.

Hi, my DC is in Year 10 now and has been struggling with English literature. Any recommended Eduqas English tutors please? Online tuition is preferred. Many thanks.
