Spanish A Level not running at 6th form

My daughter's school have confirmed they won't be running Spanish at A Level due to lack of numbers. No other local state schools/ colleges are either. I've been looking for a local tutor who can do A Level, with no success. Does anyone have any suggestions about how she could do Spanish A Level (school have said she can do her other two subjects there in 6th form).
Many thanks

That's a shame.
How far time wise are you willing for her to travel? It isn't unusual where I am for a journey time of 1hr door to door for college. Have you checked everywhere in that distance?
School will almost certainly need her to do 3 A levels with them, otherwise it won't count as 'full time' for them to get funding for her.
I can't really think of a workaround, hopefully someone else can.

I've just seen on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/further_education/4624910-post-gcses-2022-year-12-202223-general-support-thread?page=18 (on that page) someone's DD doign Geography online as there weren't enough people wanting to do it.
Though with the speaking aspect of Spanish that could be hard.

Is there an online course? How do home schoolers Di it?

Fairislefandango · 24/06/2023 15:42

How depressing. Unfortunately languages A Levels often get low numbers. It's (rightly) viewed as a hard A Level. It's a big jump from GCSE and it woukd be very tough to do it independently. Other than a tutor, I'm not sure how she would manage tbh. Students need to be speaking lots, and interaction with the teacher is vital.

Op might you be able to find a tutor online? I tutor MFL up to A level remotely (I’m not advertising, I don’t do Spanish) and have worked with students for an hour or maybe two a week with good results. If it’s 1-1 you don’t need as much time IME.

You can arrange for the exam to be run at a private centre and they should arrange the speaking exam as well, or her school may facilitate this even if they don’t offer the subject.

She could do her Spanish A level at an online school like Interhigh

This might be useful, it's been a while since I home educated but this is what I used for info he-exams.fandom.com/wiki/A-levels

If you live near London or Manchester you've got the Instituto Cervantes. Good luck with it hope she finds something.

DS was in the same position 2 years ago. He's just finished studying Spanish A level with Oxford Education Online: https://oxfordeducationonline.co.uk/ His teacher is a native speaker living in Spain, so all teaching via Zoom. She has been superb, but this is a seriously not-cheap option.

We also looked at Harrow online sixth form, which I liked - not quite as expensive from memory and I assume you get to become Prime Minister if you've been to a fancy pants public school, even virtually (bit unclear on how public school privilege works).

I would extend your range for a tutor, it doesn't need to be done in person. It's been a very hard A-level, far harder than when I did it, but DS has really enjoyed it.

So sorry. How shit have things become if geography can’t run, and main stream languages like Spanish can’t run. Shocking.

It doesn’t help you, but language teaching is in crisis. All this EBACC stuff, but more schools are letting more kids not take a language because the kids often don’t do well, they can’t recruit teachers, and take-up to A Level is low. To be honest, it’s in free fall, with uni numbers plummeting too.

I guess those who do take languages will be in demand.

Do you know any local teachers? You could ask them if they could approach the language teachers in their school to see if they would be willing to tutor/teach online.

i ended up doing two a levels at college then the spainish a level at the regional college near me. I had to do an extra gcse at the 6th form college- else they were going to charge me as a part timer.

Lindos1 · 24/06/2023 17:57

Thanks all. I didn't expect to get any replies, so this is all super helpful. It's gutting they're not running Spanish, especially as they're a language speciality school, and students have to take a language for GCSE!
You've given me some things to look into here. Really appreciate it everyone.

One of the advantages of Hants' no school 6th forms is the colleges are large enough to run pretty much any A level you fancy. (Doesn't help the OP though).

FrodisCapering · 24/06/2023 20:49

Also, you could look at Spanish courses in Spain in the holidays to extend knowledge.

Didiplanthis · 26/06/2023 17:29

Take up of GCSE MFL is in free fall and frighteningly low this year at my DD's school.. I have no idea how they will run A levels in them..
