Carrying pe kit - separate bag?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/06/2023 09:11

When I was at secondary, all the boys had separate boot bags for their trainers, and the girls would bring their pe kits in a Jane Norman shopping bag

I'm about to order a bag for dc1 for secondary, and wondered what your kids do about carrying pe kit to school. Do any girls have boot bags? I'm not sure a full pe kit would fit into the backpack with all the other stuff needed too.

I'd get a gym bag and a shoe bag that fits inside the gym back

Sports bags or draw string bags that sit in their lockers until holidays i.e. do not really get carried back and forth. I think it would be more usual to put muddy boots/trainers in a plastic bag in the main PE bag, but doubt anyone would bat at eye at a boot bag.

These things can be school dependent though ... I'd try to check with someone already at your school.

I agree. Every school has its own culture. At ours it's drawstring bags or a reusable shopping bag. My dd takes a packed lunch every day except for PE days so she can fit her PE kit in her bag.

Yes agree, can you check with a current pupil? When I taught in school the girls all carried drawstring plastic bags from JD sports.

I'll have a look when she does transition days and see if I can see any extra bags. No lockers sadly!

I'd wait until she's done the transition days to get the bag anyway.

She might change her mind before September.

When you pick her up on transition day try and see if you can spot pupils with PE kit. My dd took a drawstring Nike bag.

My DC no longer have any jotters or other books to carry around as they have ipads so they take PE kit in their normal bag. PE kit also takes up hardly any space. T shirt, shorts and trainers only. Obviously that will vary across schools too

pre-covid DD had a drawstring bag that lived in locker / tutor cupboard, and just the shirt came home for regular washes.

DS started with a separate bag but got fed up of carrying two bags around so we got a larger rucksack to fit it all in. Make sure whatever you decide is waterproof/ use plastic bags as liners as otherwise it all ends up soaking wet if they walk to or from school in the rain.

Some days he had trainers for pe and football boots for after school club.

Y7 - bag stayed in locker, came home at half-term/holidays
Y8-9 - bag was carried back and forth as we gave up the locker
Y10-11 - Kit was cramped into her normal backpack or if at all, she had a fabric tote if she had hockey/football and needed the shinpads.

PE kit smells by yr7/8
My DD takes a PE tshirt & trainers in normal bag as the girls wear the cycling shorts that they wear under rolled up school skirts
