We could get in either. Both good schools so we're very lucky in that sense. Just can't decide which would be best for DS! What are the most important factors to consider?
He's academic and sporty.

School 1
No uniform
Seems more liberal
Apparently good for arts / drama
Closest to us

School 2
Uniform
Seems more academic - has slightly better results
Bit further away but still walking distance
Most of DS's closest friends are going here

Which has the better sport offering, if he's sporty?

What do they offer at GCSE stage? You can't guarantee everything will still be running by the time he hits that stage, but take a look at what's on offer and see if one jumps out at you.

What about other extra curriculars? Do they offer similar? Is there something at one that would be really great that the other doesn't have?

How long are the lunch breaks? Weird I know but some schools have really short ones and other longer. Maybe you prefer a longer one with clubs running.

Visit them, during the school day if possible and not just the open evening. Do you get a better vibe off one? For all the comparing results and courses and uniform policies, I swear sometimes it just comes down to gut instinct. One of them might just feel right.

Which does he want to go to?

Are his friends just school friends or sports club friends and out of school friends? In my experience most of the “just school friends” stopped being good friends as they made new friends whereas those with shared out of school interests stayed despite some being at different schools.

Does the first one still have good academic results, just not quite as good?

Do they both have teams in his sports if it’s team sports he plays?

Do both offer PE at gcse and A level if he’s likely to go that route?

Does he have art or drama interest making the first more attractive for that?

Walk past both at lunchtimes and home times if possible, what does the general feeling seem like?

Do they have open parents Facebook pages? Look at those ( baring in mind some parents use them to rant and may not always be correct in their rants)

Do you know any parents of students at either school? What do they like and dislike about them?

Uniform can be good, but some schools ( looking at ours) take it’s perfection too far rather than dealing with other issues. Non uniform may be more comfortable but can lead to bullying/theft issues.

Read their bullying policies.

Plus everything @MarmiteRoll said.

Often a visit to each will give you and DS the decision. I remember going to one school open evening and DD and I looked at each other and said “no way “ despite it being excellent on paper.

Take him to both open days, and go on gut feel.
We were in a similar position. DS1 walked into school X and announced "I'm going to school Y we saw last week".

Which does your son want? When there's apparently not much in the decision (as here), his preference should definitely sway you. Happy children generally do better than sad ones.

Choose the one with the best sporting options.

AmyandPhilipfan · 16/06/2023 16:58

It would totally depend on the child. My eldest might have enjoyed a liberal, nurturing school with not as much focus on academics.

His brother would have taken it as a way to totally rule the roost and do no work. He needed a school with strong discipline.

And then it would also depend on the ethos of the school. If the kids are attending the liberal school because they're naturally focused and don't need firm rules then that might be a lovely environment. If it's all the worst behaved kids who are choosing it and so the school has become a Lord of the Flies type of environment then I would steer well clear.

Depends what we all thought looking round them both. Head teacher's talk, impression I got from staff and students we talked to, SEN and MH provision.

As well as my individual child of course.

Silverribbons · 16/06/2023 17:53

I'd choose 2, unless 1 is a lot better in terms of sports offerings, as you mention your DC is sporty.

lljkk · 16/06/2023 18:04

If he can't decide then 2, because he'll start with familiar faces. 2 nice choices, though.

TrustPenguins · 18/06/2023 22:32

Thanks all.

They are 2 nice choices, we feel very lucky for that.

DS doesn't seem to mind which one, he's quite laid back!!
I think he presumes he'll just go to the closest.

Need to look into the sporting options, that's a good point.
