A level choices

I just wanted perspective here. Ds has chosen Geography, Physics, Maths and Further Maths. Someone made a comment the other day that it was an odd choice? What do you think? What combos have your children chosen/choosing for A level?

I don't think that's odd. M, FM, P is a really common combination and Geog overlaps in some ways. People think anything other than Maths, bio, chem or eng, hist, French is odd! DS has chosen M, FM, Music and German and that definitely confused people.

Not odd at all, OP!
Back in the day, I did English, Maths, FM, Physics (and Philosophy, and Electronics, as after-school activities which led to taking the exam).
DS has signed up for Math, FM, Physics, Chemistry (classic combo).
DD knew she wanted to go to art school, so picked Art plus other things she enjoyed with no need to make them "fit together." She ended up with Art, Ancient History, and Biology (plus an AS in Classical Civ.)

Not weird at all.
I did geography. It’s a great subject and can go with either arts or sciences.

beeswain · 14/06/2023 06:45

Exactly what my ds studied. He enjoyed the breadth that Geography gave him.
One of his cousins studied Maths, Physics, French and Italian because she couldn't decide if she wanted a STEM or language course St University

That’s fine op. My dc took French, Eng lit and geography and then maths, biology and PE. Odder combos than your dc I would say. Geography is classed as a science and maths is recommended if you are taking physics, FM fits well too.

clary · 14/06/2023 06:46

That’s two separate Dc of mine btw not one who did six!

My sis did biology, chemistry, Spanish. Then law at university. Now that’s weird.

It's not an odd choice. It's brilliant. The maths and physics will give an excellent grounding for the dollops of science that are in geography.

redskytwonight · 14/06/2023 07:26

That's exactly what my DC did (minus the Further maths). So I don't think it's an odd choice as Geography is really a science (and is helped by the Stats side of Maths).

TeenDivided · 14/06/2023 07:29

Doesn't sound at all odd to me either. Geography is the bridge between science and humanities.

lanthanum · 14/06/2023 10:58

Really good combination. If he's interested in physical geography, physics and maths are potentially very useful - I met someone doing a maths degree because he wanted to do research in physical geography - things like fluid flow become very important. And double maths/physics is a good combination on its own.

DD's school has four doing further maths, and none are doing the classic M, FM, P, C combination.

Radishgreen · 14/06/2023 14:08

The classic combination at our school Is the 'most maths' option of M, FM, P and Comp sci.

TizerorFizz · 14/06/2023 16:33

@disappointed101 This is a great combination. DH is a civil engineer and there’s lots of work for engineers regarding the environment. So Geography fits in with environmental engineering very well. It’s also possible to do nearly any branch of engineering with those A levels. Or Geography which opens up loads of careers. Or maths or physics of course. Management and Law are also possible. So it’s not remotely odd. There’s loads of possibilities I haven’t thought of!

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2023 16:34

Bewildered that anyone would say that was odd!

disappointed101 · 14/06/2023 17:00

Yes it threw me too! I’m glad and feeling much calmer about it now. Thanks for your responses.

@disappointed101 People often have outdated views where Geography was an “art”. Not a science. It’s now more scientific and goes with the other subjects very well.

Foxesandsquirrels · 14/06/2023 18:14

It's a very good mix. A geography degree is normally a BSc anyway as it has a large science bit, depending on modules obv. It'll give him great breadth and he'll keep up his essay skills for uni.
