Secondary school - sports day

Can anyone tell me what it's like? I have no recollection of taking part in a secondary school sports day (2000's)

Do all children take part in sports day like at Primary School? Or is it only for the ones who opt in and the rest cheer on?

(I vaguely remember cheering people on but I'm not sure if it's a real memory or not)

I'm only asking as DC in Year 6 is pestering me, thanks!

In my DC school they preselect children for specific events, usually everyone has at least one event. Most of the day they sit around and watch. Parents are welcome but very few attend.

It varies tbh.

My dcs' school - everyone spent the whole day watching. Everyone had to do at least one event. Cue a big rush for the high jump which was indoors and no one watched.

School I taught at - field and long distance events held in am, normal (ish) lessons; pm everyone out to watch the sprint finals and relays. Anyone could do as many events as they liked- by Yr 10 some did nothing and so even events we couldn't fill. But still I loved sports day and my form won it two years in s row.

No parents at either school.

When I was at secondary (a good 20 years ago!!), you had to put your name against at least 1 event. All track and field type stuff. Then everyone was given something to compete in, with the very sporty people doing loads more.

When we weren't competing there was just lots of sitting in the stands, watching others, chatting and snacking.

Thanks everyone!

I asked my class friends from 2000 & apparently I did the shotput at least once! 😱 I don't remember but my best friend said i was quite good. But it has been confirmed that I spent the days mainly getting sunburnt, eating snacks and chatting!

Sounds like the perfect teenage chill day!

At DC's secondary school it's only a selected few that actually take part and everyone else just skives off has to sit around and watch. Most of the DC seem to hate it to the point I'm not sure why the school bothers.

ClashCityRocker · 08/06/2023 21:20

If I recall correctly, we had heats in PE with the best few from each house going forward to compete on actual sports day.

Worked well - the sporty kids got to do their thing, the non sporty ones got to wander round the field under the pretence of being spectators (or bunk off down the slip for a crafty cig)

Don't recall parents coming to watch.

Changingmynameyetagain · 08/06/2023 21:25

At my DC school the kids put their name down for any events they want to enter and the rest of the kids skive off for the day spectating.
No parents invited.

Clarabellawilliamson · 08/06/2023 22:03

It really depends! My last school- every child ran a mile then everyone down to the field to watch the events, lots of different types of events eg bike race, tug of war, special events for some of the send kids, more like a village fete atmosphere. Lots of dressing in house colours, face paint, cheering etc. I loved it!

Current school everyone walks to a nearby (ish!) sports stadium and watches events whilst wearing pe kit so is more 'professional' but not as inclusive, or fun.

Bookendortwo · 08/06/2023 22:19

At dc school they have to put themselves down for at least 1 event but no more than 3. There's lots of sitting around, parents don't go dc1 and 2 hate it, dc3 loves it.

Foxesandsquirrels · 09/06/2023 10:06

No idea, I don't go to them. DD is in Y10. Y9 she said she did nothing. I imagine the same will happen this year. She likes to chill with her friends on the field and watch.

CollieWobbles2023 · 09/06/2023 10:34

Haha look at that! What a coincidence 😂

(Maybe she saw my thread!)

DCs school spend a whole day doing sports day. Everyone is supposed to sign up for at least one activity. The majority of them spend all day sitting on the field playing on their phones and iPads.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 10/06/2023 10:06

Current school does a mix of events all day, both traditional track and field but also team games like football, netball, cricket, rounders, volleyball etc. There's also things like table tennis and badminton on indoors.

Everyone has to do something but no one has to do an individual event if they don't want to. They earn points for their house, including for just showing up.

It's intended to be fun but my current tutor group are very sporty and do take it seriously! But there is something even for those who are less good at traditional sports day stuff!

Needmorelego · 10/06/2023 10:29

I dont remember doing sports day at secondary at all (1986-93 era).
I remember one time in sixth form we were all randomly sent outside to have a massive form group vs form group frisbee competition.
It was so random my conspiracy theory about it was they had to de-mouse the building or something 😂
We had regular snowball (winter) and water (summer) fights with the Catholic school next door but of course they were unofficial events 😂😂

Idkmanbutgonnatattoo · 19/06/2023 22:16

at our school it’s whoever wants to can do it and everyone else just does classes as normal
