Hi,

I am looking for a 11+ tutor who have got their students into QE boys grammar school Barnet.

Recommendation from parents of boys currently studying at QE is massively appreciated!

Thank you.

I don’t know if this may help. I was recommended this online site by another member.

This gives a free trial and £30 off the first month:

I suspect you are too late to secure a good tutor if your child is currently Year 5. I am considering using this company for a 1 week crash course in the summer although it is not cheap! Alongside Atom Learning which the person above has posted about.

Some are stronger in different areas as well. My son loves maths but needs support with the literacy side. He can do it he is just more reluctant and needs encouragement. The vocab is also so different to school.

Thank you for all the responses.

@Torvi1211 thank you for sharing the code.

@roses2 https://11pluslondon.co.uk/ looks promising. We might do the online crash course in August.

DS has been doing weekly tuitions for 11+ since he started in Year 5. We recently started with Atom Learning.

I am also keen to know more about the profile of boys who pass QE entrance exams - how many hours they practise/study per day? tips on improving speed?

I’m focusing on the English for 20 minutes a day (more than that he gets 😐) as his maths is strong. Also one hour of 1-2-1 tuition a week face to face. I know Atom do a tutor service online which the reviews are good. I might do extra when it’s near the exam time. Will see how he’s doing. I don’t want him to get burnout.

Here is one of the extreme example reported in other forum, it is 4 years ago.

Although the pass mark is slightly higher now. Poster's DC get top rank in QE so probably you don't need to practice to that level. The top rank and pass mark are normally 7-10 MC questions distance (depends on birth Month and other factors).

For QE is one round only, so not just speed, accuracy and ability to handle pressure under the exam condition is important.

I’m exhausted just reading that post. I would not have even thought of doing a breakdown of extra curricular activity, the amount of time my child reads what they eat etc. it’s incredibly dedicated. My concern would be if a child needs that much input from year 3 onwards how they would manage independently. Anyhow a interesting read thank you :)

roses2 · 09/06/2023 14:37

Omg that's insane!! What kind of parent puts their child through such a regime. Really, the amount of competitive tutoring, homework etc is getting ridiculous. Kids need life experience not maths and English rammed down their throat every day.

And i day this as someone using Atom learning but equally happy with state school if he doesn't get in.

Torvi1211 · 09/06/2023 19:46

Unfortunately our local school is inadequate 😬 It’s a balance between supporting ds and really crossing everything that it goes well. He doesn’t know how dire the school is locally. 🤞 for all the kids taking the test this year :)

The QE maths exam is not mega hard, but you need speed and accuracy. So ability to focus is essential. And for English you need a really good working knowledge of grammar (proper use of colons, semicolons, hyphens, dashes, etc.) It's multiple choice, so easier than other types of exam. But the pace at QE is fast, so if your son doesn't genuinely enjoy studying, I would be very careful. They are given 2-3 hours' homework per day, there are lots of extracurricular activities on top.

We only specifically prepared for the exam for a couple of months, but we home educated so were well ahead of curriculum anyway. It also helps to be really well read.

I can recommend an excellent tutor. My son got a place at QE Boys' School
