Ye Gods, like pulling teeth.

Deadline been on notice board and mentioned every lesson for about 100 years.

But NO ONE knew about it......apparently....

Now all moaning "not enough time...blah...blah...moan...moan....."

Bless their little hearts

Textiles was due in on tuesday. They have had since October!!!. BUT all I get is I didn't give them enough time!!! One girl blamed her parents for taking her skiing over 1/2 term!
Child Development is the worst. Students have to do 6 visits to a child, 1 per month since September. Excuses for not having them done = child ALWAYS on holiday. Child in hospital or has chickenpox (for 3rd time!!!!!), printer broken (don't you love that chestnut) but never thought to bring pen drive to school!!!, childs parents have moved to timbuktoo ( not really but you never know when that will be used!!).
They think I'm a nag but I am getting a little edgy now.
There is something to say about 100% exam courses but despite all this I love what I do and I enjoy a good nag at them every now and then!!

This has been going on for 12 years so if anyone has an instant remedy then sell it, you'll make a fortune.

It's incredible isn't it? I'm sure we took far more responsibility for our own learning when we were at school. No c/w back then of course, but students seem to be expected to be mollycoddled and encouraged and cajoled and guided and praised every time they complete one single paragraph ...

What subject Fizzbuzz?

ScienceTeacher · 20/02/2008 22:08

I am so glad that we no longer have coursework in Science

We do have a few in school who have not handed in various pieces of coursework though.

As the mother of a Y11 boy, I am fairly sure that he is up to date, thankfully.

fizzbuzz · 21/02/2008 17:41

Didot, we start Textiles coursework in May of Year 10 (all DT start then, but we only have 2x 55min lessons per week) and are thinking of after Easter now, due to patheticness of inability to meet deadlines.
Somebody trying to make an entire dress in 4 lessons

Sympathy, sympathy, sympathy.

I get the same sort of thing with the new IAAsthat we do with the kidsfor GCSE scince. Every lesson for 3 weeks I remind them of the date of the next assessment

Every time they have one, they whinge that 'No-one told us!'

fizzbuzz · 21/02/2008 18:00

It's amazing really, we never seem to tell them anything.......just like we always seem to lose their work....

My best moment was last year when one of my Yr11's completed his coursework to C grade standard - he asked me very politely to stop writing home as his parents had received 6 letters from me and then accused me of being like a camp commandant as I had 'forced' him to attend coursework 'clinics' during lunch time and afterschool. Life would be so much better if they actually did some work during lesson time!

Actually just bring back straight exams and get rid of coursework.

alfiesbabe · 22/02/2008 23:41

I do wonder whether all the lunchtime and after school catch up sessions we provide (out of our own goodwill) are actually solving the problem or worsening it..... I guess for some kids it must seem that a deadline isnt really a deadline because there'll always be another chance...

happilyconfused · 22/02/2008 23:53

but alfie what would your HT say if your dept did no sessions? Every dept does it at our school plus we have the English & Maths teachers having to tutor as part of the G2C initiative.

It is all these 'extras' that we have to do which makes me vote for an end to coursework or have a properly moderated coursework exam with no involvment from teachers or mummy/daddy

nappyaddict · 23/02/2008 01:08

imo coursework should only be done in school under teacher's supervision and in almost exam conditions. i was always envious of a friend of mine at a different school who's teacher basically told them what to put to turn it into a B grade or whatever.

fizzbuzz · 23/02/2008 08:27

Yeah, I wish coirsework would end. I enjoy doing it, but all catch up sessions etc do seem to extend the deadline ........

I am still extracting coursework from Y11s fro Applied Science. Yesterday was supposed to be the final deadline but I was then undermined by the KS4 coordinator who took them out of lessons to complete, meaning the last 2 hours they spent with me in a computer room was wasted with them pratting around as they knew that they could have longer on it. I give up! I have nearly melted down this week. Bring back 100% exam assessment.

badgermonkey · 15/03/2008 08:16

It was my Media Studies final deadline yesterday (50% of their total mark!). I STILL have kids coming next week to finish their videoes, grr. I know, I know, but what do you do?

And yes, I had all the after-school sessions, the posters on the walls, and still got blank looks and "THIS Friday?" from kids.

happilyconfused · 19/03/2008 11:48

Call mummy and daddy - tell them about all the after-school sessions that cherubs have missed and how their top grades are slipping away ......

Mummy may even drive the cherub back to school to do some work!

ajandjjmum · 19/03/2008 11:53

This mummy and daddy spent the weekend chasing around the country gathering materials, after our little cherubs dt project went up in flames 6 days before the exhibition.

His teacher was welding it!

It was an accident and these things happen - but last week was certainly stressful!

Have to say, there is enough grief with the coursework for my two, couldn't cope with a classful!

kritur · 19/03/2008 16:09

I went into school on monday (we're on early easter hols here) and there were loads of kids around with various teachers (mainly practical portfolio subjects like engineering, technology, art). I'm annoyed for my colleagues having to give up their hols to work with students who were too lazy and feckless to get it in on time. With pressure for every higher grades from SLT though I suppose we all do what we have to to get them to succeed.

fizzbuzz · 19/03/2008 20:21

I am STILL trying to get the last bits in, 3 weeks after my post.

HoD is phoning all miscreants parents tonights as work is being moderated tomorrow.

It seems to get worse every year, am sick of the lot of them!

OP posts:
fizzbuzz · 19/03/2008 20:24

That would be 4 weeks after actually

Am so fed up with them, that I bawled a Y11 out yesterday. ( I hardly ever shout at them), in what I thought was an empty room......I was so angry I didn't notice the 6th formers and staff in there....

Re the effect of course work catch up sessions. I thin that we are making rods for our own backs in the long term/

We structure our course to give the GCSE students ample revision in lesson time in the run up to the exam.

At As and A2 we simply can't do this due to the pressure of the curriculum. And we warn them, over and over again that they will ahve to learn it as they go along, that we don't have the masses of revision time during the classes. And every year large numbers crash and burn and fail. And then wonder why.

That will be because you did no work.

and then we go on the endless re-sit treadmill where they improve the resit grade at the expense of the next topic.

Arggghhhh

Does your bloody head in!
