11+ Sutton mock exam

SevilleOrangeTree · 01/06/2023 15:08

DD did the exam last weekend. It was her first mock she enjoyed the overall experience. Found english paper OK, maths is intense just had time to answer all 50 questions.

We will be sitting the entrance exams for Tiffin, Sutton Grammars, plus some London top private schools. Any one had their DC sit at the Sutton mock before? We are interested in how helpful you find this exam, and do you find the mock exam result a good indicator for the actual entrance exam performance for Grammar and private schools?

Thanks.

Ds did this several years ago and did find it useful as this is a large sample of a self selecting cohort so representative of those who will sit the real tests. He did really well on both the Sutton, Wallington and Olaves mocks so we had a good idea that he would get offered a place for the real thing. Also it gets them used to an unfamiliar setting, time pressure etc

We found it useful as it flagged the dd was right at the very top of the cohort for English which matched what we thought but much lower for maths and so we focused on that for the last few weeks which helped. She landed up at first choice grammar.

It is useful esp for your target sets of schools.

As pp suggest "this is a large sample of a self selecting cohort" who will be the real contenders of the SW exams. Based on our experience it is a good indicator for the relevant grammar exam format results, to the extend that it is better than Atom learning SAS scores where it has little way to difficiate between the top set students - a lot of kids attend Sutton Mock will hit 130+ SAS in practice one way or the other, but you just can't tell if that is good enough - probably good enough for top private school until I heard a lot of london private take most 130+ CAT students in MN. 😏

From a slightly different angle, here is some elements Sutton mock might not be fully reflected the actual exam performance :

Exam format and weights:
Most of the superselective school will use written exam at some stage - comprehension, maths and CW. Sutton mock only marks MC English and Maths so your DD might want to spend time to practice those over the summer (or after September the first stage), in particular English and CW, the exam technique is vastly different, even the performance should be some what correlated.

Some schools use VR and NVR as test format with significant weights (not for SW London Grammars) they are very different type of questions, so less correlation to English or Maths performance. You might want to prepare for it if the schools you apply involve this.

Even for MC English paper from similar provider (for example GL) , different school exam will have different focus: some schools English paper will have no SPaG but all comprehension questions while some other schools test a lot of SPaG (for example sutton), so it is important to identify if your DD have any gaps in different area from the mock exam and improve.

Time:
There are a few months away from the actual exam. It is the time a lot of students start gaining preparation momentum and improvement. So be aware of your DDs progress and make sure it didn't plateau too early - consistent efforts, take regular short breaks, stay motivated will help.

Both of mine did it. The value of it was the exam experience itself - being in a room with strangers sitting an exam. I would not have wanted my children's first exam experience being the real thing.

DD achieved a score in the top 10% of the Sutton mock test, which prepares her for the grammar school exam next month. We are also aiming for the best private selective schools in London. Does anyone have any suggestions on which schools are within her reach? We have been living in London for only six months, so we are not very familiar with the school entrance competition here.

Top 10% in Sutton Mock can try any top selective private school in London, will stand very high chance.

My DS gave the mock and secured 214. What are the chances he can clear the real exam.

@Bbsrmum I suggest you start a new thread as this one is 18 months old and people might reply to the original question rather than scrolling to the end to read yours.

The mock should also give you indicative pass mark? I think sutton mock 214 is at about at 25%-30%
