Are your Y11s on study leave?

Many local schools seem to have abandoned study leave in favour of keeping them in until the last exam, but equally quite a few seem to be only in to take exams. Just wondering what the national sort of situation is?

Depends on school. Independents and State Grammars often offer study leave with the option to come in if the student wants to. Most of the students can be trusted to revise at home and feel they need time to get down to what THEY feel they need to spend the time on.

Lots of places find the students or lots don’t really revise effectively or much at home. Some students need to be fully or almost fully directed and are unable to revise effectively by themselves. Schools like this find results are worse if students are given study leave, so they make attendance compulsory.

Mine have to go to all lessons even when the exams for that subject have been done. Seems ridiculous to have to go to a French lesson and English lit lesson in the morning when they could be at home revising for the maths exam in the afternoon.

Mine started study leave yesterday for half term. Although he's in school every day next week for revision lessons.
After half term they have booster sessions before exams and some extra revision after school. DS is planning to revise in the library in the day, I'll eat my hat if he sticks to that.

Study leave from 12 May. Independent. Offer for students to come in if they want to but think most have opted to study at home.

Study leave here starts 6th of June here but a handful are already on study leave as being in school wasn't right for them. Even after the 6th, they can still come in and we provide study rooms, computers and library facilities for them, supervised by staff who aren't teaching, supply/cover staff and we have LSAs available for students who need them.

That sounds bonkers!

My friend’s DD didn’t do a single practice timed essay set by her teacher (most off DD’s friends were doing about three a week) and then friend’s mum kicked off about exam leave not happening and took friend out of school saying that she revised better at home!
she didn’t revise better at home - her mum had no idea that she wasn’t even doing the basic revision work set by teachers, let alone anything additional.
lots of DD’s friends are talking the talk about revision but not actually doing it - she’s been invited out to the park, the local Costas, Sainsbury’s car park… she’s been called “boring” for not going… if her experience is anything to go by, schools are right that a lot of students aren’t revising at home.

My dd year 11 gets no study leave they attend revision sessions. She even has an English and science session during half term.
However she did say those that have been disruptive or carried out something they would normally get suspended for have been put on study leave! This led to a few others been naughty just so they could get study leave.

Until last Friday they were on a full normal timetable. Though some students only bothered going in for exams. After half term students only go in for the subjects they still have exams for and don’t have tutor time, rps or pe. There will be study rooms available in school but students are free to leave school when the timetable has subjects they’ve already finished. Because of her exam schedule my daughter will be in pretty much full time for the first week after half term then much less the second week.

Sadly no but am hoping none of them turn up after half term. If they worked I would have no issue. They seem to be coming in to socialise and to see their boy/girlfriends.

Starlightstarbright1 · 30/05/2023 20:34

My Ds’s school study leave starts 8/ 6 … they can still go in to study .

tbh mine is one of those children that revising at home has been a challenge. So glad he has had to go into school.
