Online careers tests - any recommendations

DC is in Y11 and has no idea really what they would like to do. Careers interview just amounted to suggesting they think harder about it, but I think they need something structured to 'think around'. I am aware of the Morrisby test, but cannot afford £90 + VAT. I know they don't have to know at this stage btw.

I think some employment agencies do have career descriptions. However the best starting point is what interests him? What subjects does he prefer? What A level combinations are best? If you can list some of these on the thread, @Sculpturist you might get suggestions you can investigate.

It’s also true many DC don’t know but looking at possibilities does lead to informed choice at A level. Has he made choices? What are they?

Stettafire · 04/05/2023 11:14

To be honest I don't put much stock in these career tests. The problem with them is that they don't know the individual. It's important to make that decision for yourself rather then have anyone else choose for you.
I'd suggest they look at their school grades and what interests them. It's possible that years later they'll change their mind, but that's ok. I've know policeman turn into driving instructors. I've known gardeners become software engineers. Your DC has a long life ahead of them, it's ok to not know 100% what career they want to commit to. They should just pick a direction and see where it takes them.

Prospects.ac.uk are surprisingly good. And free.

Sculpturist · 04/05/2023 16:43

Will look at Prospects thankyou.
They are predicted 8s and 9s. Chosen Maths, Music, Spanish, Furtther Maths. I know these are a mixture but they are what they like and are best at.
Not interested in how things work, so probably not an engineer. Much more interested in watching videos about hard and weird maths! And music theory. Not overly confident, wouldn't be an old style trader for example.

I would encourage them to check out the my career options tab on my world of work as a good starting point 🌟

Sculpturist · 06/05/2023 08:17

They had a look at Prospects which seems quite good. However all the jobs it turned up are medical related in some way - something they have absolutely no interest in and have no intention of taking at A Level!

Buzz quiz on I could? Or the national careers service has done

justawee · 06/05/2023 15:43

Sad to hear that your Dd was told to think about it more
The key at the moment is to ensure that they keep as many pathways open as possible. Generally I would advise students unsure to maybe consider a mix of a levels in subjects they enjoy this would be a part of the interview and we would discuss lots of different options. However it must be said it is never about telling the student what to do!
While the buzz quiz for example has its uses not one size fits all.
It's actually okay to not know in Y11 what you want to do but one area it's important to work on is your career management skills

*DC

QueenSmartypants · 06/05/2023 18:09

@Sculpturist if I remember rightly, prospects have 2 careers tests you can do. One which is focused on background and qualifications and one which gives more weight to interests. I used it a few months ago and you could certainly tailor it to discount certain types of careers if you weren't interested

I really like Clifton Strengths. (Ignore the I understand they do a student edition.

You buy the book. It gives you a code for online test (don't buy second hand). You answer the questions. It gives you a report about what you are best at and what careers might suit. It's £20 so not crazy
