Appeal for Grammar School / Admissions Code

Dear Members,

I am preparing an appeal against the decision of the admission authority not to offer a place to our child in the nearest grammar school.

One of my reasons is that I think that the Admissions Policy does not conform to section 1.9.j of the Admissions Code (see section below).

So far the school has argued that I have not understood this section, but I think that the school might not have understood this section.

I try to be cautious because the Admissions Policy is supposed to have been thoroughly reviewed before its publication.

I have done some research to validate my reason, but ultimately I need the advice from someone who is experienced in this specific field.

Could you please provide me with such advice or indicate where I could find such advice ?

Your time and insight would be much appreciated !

Below is section 1.9.j of the School Admissions Code :

It is for admission authorities to formulate their admission arrangements, but they must not:

in designated grammar schools that rank all children according to a pre-determined pass mark and then allocate places to those who score highest, give priority to siblings of current or former pupils;

It would help if you posted the policy that you think conflicts?

Or perhaps the appropriate anecdote of the child you feel is thick as mince compared to their older sibling who got a place whilst your child didn't? (which will also be ignoring whether they are a LAC).

If possible, I would prefer to send it via a private message.

It means, does it not, that a "superselective" must not give sibling priority (ie admit all siblings, ranked by score) before all others (ranked by score)

So is this a question about criteria used to tie break on the score where the number of qualifying pupils exceeds the number of places?

Is there a sibling who got a place you think scored lower than your child? Because it isnMt giving priority to a sibling if said sibling scored highly enough to get a place.

Bobbybobbins · 27/04/2023 20:29

It's really difficult to say whether we agree or disagree as you haven't said how you think the school has broken the code?

Unclear if any others factors are at play such as LAC or EHCP which could give higher priority?

Wenfy · 27/04/2023 20:35

It’s always worth appealing.

It isn't an ambiguous clause. It just means that if they are ranking by score, they have to admit strictly by score, and can't admit children out of order because of their sibling connection to a current or former pupil.

You are welcome to PM me the name of the school - I chair appeals panels.

prh47bridge · 27/04/2023 22:46

I'm also happy to take a look.

I think admission has left the building. She hasn't posted since September. I'm still here, though! 🙂

I'm sorry I missed some of the experts off!

BTW, even if it has to be carefully worded (as OP clearly doesn't want to post anything that identifies the school), would you give some sort of update IDC?
