Any supermarket. It doesn't need to be fancy, it just needs to meet the requirements of the school. The Bic 4-colour pens are very useful if the school does peer/self-assessment or feedback in different colours. Have bits for home as well as school and have spare pens. Some schools are very strict when it comes to having the correct equipment at all times so make sure he's fully set up to avoid any potential sanctions.

Needmorelego · 07/04/2023 12:46

Supermarkets, The Works, Wilkos, B+M, One Below, Poundland, Home Bargains, The Range....
But to be honest though get basic stuff as listed by the school (some are VERY fussy in type of pens used etc) and get spares. Lots of spares.

matis · 07/04/2023 12:47

Supermarkets in July and august will have offers on the stuff you need.

May09Bump · 07/04/2023 12:55

Don't get fancy stationary as goes missing and buy in bulk from amazon. Also usually need a see through pencil case for exam - Helix do ones and sometimes come filled.

Thank you all for the replies

I know it makes sense to but from supermarkets and Amazon & that fancy ones go missing

I bought so many rubbers and sharpeners in multipacks from Amazon that I still have them and it's at least 10 years since I bought them

Testina · 07/04/2023 13:41

Please don’t buy fancy stationery for a child turning 12!
It’s his turn to choose his own stationery now.
It’s weird for mum to do it for secondary!

clary · 07/04/2023 13:51

Your DS just needs basic stationery, nothing fancy. Only year 7 girls have those Smiggle pencil cases.

Can I suggest:
His own glue stick (he will then be v popular with teachers)
Bic biros (last longer, work better)
4-colour Bic as someone else says, handy for green pen annotations
Pencils - HB and then maybe a softer and a harder one
Pencil sharpener
Ruler - ideally a 30cm one, bendy or fold-up ones can be good
protractor
Plain and simple pencil case
Highlighters?
Rubber - those ones that fold away into their own case are nice

He will need lots of pens as he will lose them/lend them/break them

A good idea is a spare complete pencil case kept at home in case of lost pencil case one morning.

No need for loads of felt tips, fancy notebooks or anything else.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 07/04/2023 13:55

Bic pens, a highlighter and a maths set. No need for a pencil case, it'll all go in the blazer pocket.

Bbq1 · 07/04/2023 14:01

I got my ds the Helix prefilled blazer pencil case for his last year or two of school . It fits perfectly into the inside breast pocket of a blazer. He took a bag but pencil case was always to hand. Better still when exams came along and he wasn't taking a bag.

Bbq1 · 07/04/2023 14:03

Need :

Ruler
2vpencils
2 pens
4 colour pen
Eraser
Pencil sharpener

Also need a calculator (our school advised on the one to buy), a maths set and maybe highlighters later on.

redskylight · 07/04/2023 16:04

It's useful to buy a set for school and a set for home. Less likely to leave something crucial at home.

And lots of glue sticks.

And don't buy fancy (or fancy pencil cases) unless he's been at the school for a while and decides he wants them.

It sounds like the school has given you a list, so just stick to what's on that.

nicknamehelp · 07/04/2023 16:33

Don't get anything better than basics will all be missing by Xmas. I bulk buy pens and pencils and they normally get new ones out cupboard most weeks.

Darthwazette · 07/04/2023 16:39

A handy hint I learnt at school….

stationEry = pEn

stationAry = cAr

Fallulah · 07/04/2023 16:43

Secondary teacher here…

As many of these as you can persuade them to carry: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Colours-Original-Ballpoint-Medium-Point/dp/B007CX2HKE

A ruler and a set of highlighters.

We don’t use pencils in my subject but maybe a pencil, sharpener and rubber too.

Some students have their own gluesticks at the start of term but not by the end!

Very few of mine actually have pencil cases, especially the boys.

Baileysoverice · 07/04/2023 16:46

Buy cheap and buy plenty. I work as a TA in a secondary and have a secondary age DD. Current trend with teenagers seems to be exploding pens and breaking things up into small pieces. I wouldn't waste any time with fancy stuff. Buy what is needed and make sure to always have spares.

user1497643032 · 07/04/2023 19:25

@Fallulah the school specifically listed the pencil shades to have eg HB etc

Fancy will either go missing, stolen or bullying fodder. Stick to what the school says, all schools are different so follow what the school says, eg someone on here mentioned you don't need a pencil case, if you didn't have one at my kids school you would get an instant negative.

What if he wants his mum to do it as he completely doesn't care what it is going to look like. I am afraid my son even doesn't care what he wears and going with him shopping is a tragedy for him

How patronising! Just spell the correctly in responses. No need to point it out.

Anyway, it’s (E)nvelopes and (A)rrested.

Testina · 08/04/2023 08:47

@ReneeX them it’s a lesson for him that he still has to do admin type tasks that he doesn’t care about. At 11 just because you don’t care doesn’t mean you dump it on someone else. He can still take responsibility for ordering a set on Amazon.

Also, if he really doesn’t care, that’s still no reason to saddle him with OP’s idea of “fancy” stationery.

rumpsteak · 08/04/2023 09:08

Staedtler do a tin which is usually £20 but often reduced to £6/7 in Tesco. It has everything you need in it.

My son never request fancy things, and has admin skills to ask kindly to buy him whatever is needed. It is just when it comes to choice he is pretty indifferent and says: you chose. He also cleans his room for several years and now at 10 yrs old including washing the floor and regular hovering. He labelled all shelves to know what he keeps where. I cannot complain about his admin things. He is just not a shopper as he doesn't care for choice

Chickenkorma64 · 08/04/2023 12:26

dry wipe whiteboard pen and spare. Used a lot in lessons where I work

reluctantbrit · 11/04/2023 18:50

Check the school's requirements. Ours is quite fussy about colour of pens for self-marking for example.

We have
gel or ink pens, much better for handwriting than cheap biros. It took DD ages to find one she found comfortable.
Blue or black for work, green and purple for marking. Keep spares, a lot
Maths equipment as stated by the school, keep a spare set at home. DD would get same day detention if she comes to school without it.
Glue stick
Simple pencil case
We had to order an arts kit from school, cheaper than buying everything separate. So no need for drawing pens, colour pencils or paint
