Tiffin boys : Dance classes

Shahriz · 28/03/2023 21:07

Hi
I have heard that dance classes are compulsory for year 7 in Tiffin boys. Can a child be exempted from these due to religious/cultural reasons ?
Do you know anyone who was exempted due to any reason ?
Thankyou

You can Google Tiffin Year 7 curriculum and dance is listed along with other subjects. I've heard the ds really enjoy it. There is a photo of the team that won the London Youth Games dance competition in Feb 22 that you can goggle too. I don't know why you would want to withdraw your dc. He has done well to gain a place, focus on the positives and such a full curriculum.

What might those reasons be? Does your religion prohibit dance?

redrobin75 · 28/03/2023 21:50

In year 8 they study a 1 year course in cooking! Sounds like a well balanced curriculum.

Pretty sure most lads study food tech these days! Agree op, why would you not want ds to study dance?

Smogtopia · 28/03/2023 22:52

I don't want to be too outing but I'm linked to the school.

What reasons prohibit? Did you raise them at application stage?

Shahriz · 28/03/2023 23:53

@Smogtopia Religious reasons.
My DS is still in primary. Asking for future . If I mention it at the application stage will it be considered or will it negatively impact his application ?

Can you articulate your religious reasons more specifically @Shahriz to help people understand? E.g. according to Wikipedia "In Islam, extreme Salafists and Wahhabis consider dancing in general to be haram (forbidden)". Is that your religion?

But in general, no, you can't withdraw a child from any curriculum subject except for RE or SRE.

Shahriz · 29/03/2023 05:14

Thankyou very much. That's really helpful.

Whilst religious exceptions are viewed and taken into account - it would have to be a very detailed account as to why he wouldn't be participating. In truth I don't think it would be accepted as cohesion is a huge part of the ethos.

You are anonymous here so can you shed some more light - it's not something from application or history of pupils I've ever come across.

Shahriz · 29/03/2023 09:53

Sorry don't want to convert it into a religious debate.
Appreciate your replies and input. Thankyou

@Smogtopia , you, on the other hand, are not as anonymous as you may think you are. You have stated you have a connection to the school, but unwisely didn't change your username first, so any of your colleagues or friends looking back through your post history will be able to work out exactly who you are and find out a lot of personal information about you, if they were curious enough. If I was you, I would ask MNHQ to withdraw the posts that mention the school connection. This thread will be here for posterity but your posts don't need to be on it if you remove them.

Smogtopia · 29/03/2023 11:07

@Shahriz I respect that. Best of luck with your application

Smogtopia · 29/03/2023 11:35

@oktopus that sounds rather ominous. I'm sure my associates wouldn't bother playing private investigator on mumsnet (is that really a thing? Why would anyone trawl and read posts unless on a thread relevant to an interest?)
I've posted here in good faith to attempt to help someone on a topic I'm rather passionate about so if someone wants to use that in bad spirit that is their prerogative

oktopus · 29/03/2023 11:46

Ok, up to you, just friendly advice, in case you have colleagues lurking. Googling a username with the word Mumsnet surfaces its full thread history. People do do that, so mumsnetters who are conscious about privacy often change username if they're giving personal information that might identify them.

Smogtopia · 29/03/2023 11:47

Thanks @oktopus I honestly didn't know that was a thing!

supravit · 29/03/2023 15:51

That's just sad.

SleepyRooster · 29/03/2023 16:00

Why would you mention anything like that at "application stage" - Tiffin boys is an academic test, that's it. It's a state grammar not a private school. Am I missing something?

Chocolate23 · 29/03/2023 16:25

Is this thread a joke 🤣

I did wonder that too, or perhaps looking for a creative excuse to get out of dance classes, which I can empathise with. 🙂

Nonameoclue · 29/03/2023 17:55

Places are allocated according to the admissions criteria, not according to whether a child will go to dance lessons or not. Any hurdles to do with that would come later when your child was at the school.

AnorLondo · 29/03/2023 18:56

Isn't the beat way to find out to contact the school rather than asking on Mumsnet?

And won't most schools involve dancing at some point or a other? Early years at primary could involve moving around to music in dance or PE lessons, and I still haven't managed to repress my memories of having to do Scottish Country dancing.

Londonsummer · 29/03/2023 19:00

Sadly, this thread is not a joke.

OP started another thread where she's asked for input about Tiffin boys preparations as the child is in Y4.

What OP does not realise is for all the academic excellence they are chasing, if they raise a boy who will graduate from Tiffin in the middle of 2030s with the indoctrination that dancing is not culturally and religiously acceptable stands no chance in fitting in any social or work environment in this country and the Tiffin education will be completely wasted on him.

Well that sounds like you haven’t got a good reason then.
