Ds (with ehcp) couldn’t do Eng Lang GCSE oral presentation, what will happen?

He has autistic traits but diagnosis is anxiety.
He had prepared the presentation but just froze.
Does anyone know what this will mean? Will he have failed his English or is there some leeway?

He needs Al we’re from his doctor. My ASd Dd couldn’t do her Spanish oral. GP letter sorted it. He was basically I’ll on the day of his exam.

A note!

DS could record his at home so that must be allowed under one exam board at least. I would ask if he can redo it this way due to his autism.

At our school the teacher allowed kids to do it without an audience if they couldn't do it in front of one.

"Failing" the oral won't affect the final grade.

This is all very helpful, thank you.

He was already without an audience!
Recording it might work, if we can swing that.

English teacher here - the marks for the oral are recorded separately and have no bearing on the final grade. So he will just get a Fail recorded on his certificate for this part but his actual English GCSE could still be a 9.

PinkPomegranite · 28/03/2023 18:39

The English Language oral is an endorsement so has no effect on his GCSE grade except that his certificate will show NC (not classified) in the endorsement column. Loads of students miss it due to absence or refusal.
You could speak to the head of department about adjustments they could put in place to allow him to do it, such as doing the presentation with just a teacher or a smaller group as an audience, the teacher prompting him if he freezes or changing the type of presentation he's doing. They can make reasonable adjustments for students with extra needs.
Tel him not to worry it won't affect his grade at all.

So the overall result can still count as a pass for things like university entrance even if he has failed the oral?
His grade isn’t too important other than that- he‘s very much a maths and science person.

That's right, yes. Don't give it another thought, honestly.

Thank you all so much x

If DS still can’t do it even with adjustments in some circumstances pupils can be exempt.

Bobbybobbins · 28/03/2023 20:01

We always have at least one every year who cannot do it for SEN reasons and it's fine - no affect on GCSE grade as others have said

imip · 06/04/2023 19:15

Dd is doing it only to one teacher she knows, she is autistic and very anxious and it is on her favourite topic - a singer! This was her reasonable adjustment.
