I sent in 3 letter of medical evidence with my son’s high school application he was declined and I am appealing.
I am getting more evidence together,
my question is do I need to send in copies of my original evidence with the appeal as thinking the appeals panel would have not seen it, get to see it?

Not an expert. Send extra copies, nothing to lose.
Do they have an 'exceptional medical' category?

Also find other things that would benefit eg extra curricular.

The appeal panel is independent from the school. The school may include your medical evidence in their submission to the panel, but you can't guarantee that so the safest thing is to include it yourself.

The appeal panel should get everything that was included with your application but there is no guarantee. I would definitely include it again.

Also every school has different admissions criteria. You need to read the admissions very carefully for this school and make sure you meet it exactly. If it says that two letters from medical professionals are required that name the school, then you must provide two letters, for example. You should get sent a pack that will state the grounds on which your son was declined a place. If you applied under medical/social criteria, then you need to check exactly what they required. All the lovely letters from teachers, SENCo, etc won't make a difference if you don't meet the minimum criteria first.

Hello, I am appealing a secondary school place for my son. He is currently number 2 on the waiting list and is nearly at the end of year 7. He has an autism diagnosis and i want him to go to this specific school because I have heard amazing things about their sen department. What evidence can I give them to show that my son needs a place at this school? I know people have said about letters from paediatricians etc but what exactly do we get them to write in the letters that will help?

Ideally you want them to say that, in their professional opinion, your son needs to attend this school and set out their reasons. The next best thing would be for them to set out the things that would help your so which you can then show match the appeal school better than the allocated school. What you definitely don't want is for them to say, "Mummy3098 tells me" or anything else that sounds like they are simply reflecting your views rather than giving their professional opinion.

Thank you for your advice. What exactly can I get his paediatrician to say about why the school would benefit him? I've got a feeling that the paed will ask me what to write on the letter but I don't even know myself. I know that the amount of children at the school is nearly half of what some of the other local schools offer and this is what he needs, just not sure what else to get them to say.

Also wondering who else I could get another letter from? Would they accept something from his current senco?

prh47bridge · 03/05/2023 16:35

You must not tell the paediatrician what to write. That will devalue their letter. The paediatrician needs to express their own professional view as to what features a school might have that would help your son.

Yes, a letter from the senco at his current school could help.
